Been meaning to type up something for a bit, here. Will have to maybe add in some details later, but I stopped by Mike's place. He was gracious. I was a pain in the ass. I brought my Flex top (having a couple of slight mods done to it) and my 46. And some amps. Played the MAS 109 and the 112 with the new Eminence driver (got to play it next to an 18 Sound 112, like mine). Both are pretty kickass cabs. Don't know if the new 112 was 4 Ohms or 8 Ohms. Mike has said that it's more efficient than the others (suitable for use with a Walkabout or a lower-powered tube head). Whatever the nominal resistance impedance of the cab, I did have to back the attenuator on my poweramp off 2 or 3 clicks (2 or 3 dB, going by the scale on the front, but I don't know how accurate or context-dependent that is) when switching to it from the 18 Sound cab. The new one is a bit thicker sounding -- there is a little bump in the upper bass -- and the tone/feel strikes me, at first blush, as somewhere between that of the 18 Sound 112 and the Flex.

MAS 109 sounded good vertically on the floor -- like the 112, seems to work very well this way -- sounded even better on a stand and turned horizontally. Think I might slightly prefer the voice of the new 112, but the 109 (especially horizontal) still has good mids, nice articulation, and a nice balance -- and it's hard to argue with its one-hander size. Despite going ridiculously low, not boomy.

18 Sound 112 vs. new 112 -- for me, tough call, but it's got me thinking, which says a lot. Would be interesting to hear both on a gig -- or on a football field. Or on a gig on a football field, with a beautiful woman handing me a sandwich at halftime... Ungh -- late, need to eat, hallucinating again. ;)

Mostly played my trusty Fender, but got a little bit of time with Mike's five string made by Chris Rice. Chambered a bit, with a single f-hole in the top, and has some of that acoustic bass guitar "air" but still plays and articulates very much like a solid-body electric. Single pickup -- Mike said it was wound by Chris -- passive, with a lot of switching options on a rotary switch. Fun bass. Actually (google, google...) here it is: Instrument #209 • Rice Custom Guitars - Rice Custom Guitars

Also got a bit of time with the Sonic Farm (the DI, not the amp proto) which impressed with its low-register articulation -- even and fast in all registers without feeling stiff. Mike says that most guys go to the Pentode mode and stay there -- it's fat and funky -- but I enjoyed the triode mode as well -- really pops harmonics, with a nice front to the note, but clean (not a lot of extraneous thump).

109 is voiced leaner than the 46 but thicker than the 18 Sound 112. Nice harmonics. 46 had the best harmonics (gauged by my fumbling through the first 20 seconds of Portrait of Tracy -- must learn that tune for real, now) of the night, though -- with the SF in triode mode, even with the tweeter off, they rang beautifully.

That's all for now.

Why am I hearing Eric Burden singing spill the wine? Cool analysis MarkA They are all different flavors of great. I read a thread today where a great local player in my area was opining about room issues being an unavoidable problem where he was walking off to stage left or right with wireless and hearing sound degrade and I just want to hijack the thread and say No it is not inevitable. I want to post about BigE MAS on that thread. But I remember other fans of other products receiving less than welcome response when they posted "you just need to buy or build XYZ" These cabs are going to only slowly win over the people who hear them live or like me are won over by the pedigree of the people involved in the development. Once you get one you can't go back. No more boomy room. No more deadspots to the side of the stage. Sounds great behind the stage. Go for a walk out the front door on wireless. You and the folks outside on smoke break will hear the bass like they were 5 ft from center stage

Nothing wrong with 2 of the MAS112's stacked vertically! Great dispersion and whole lotta umph.
