Mike always compared the 6s to 10s, so his 46 performed similarly to what one would expect from a 410. I also have an MAS-28 that's recently acquired. It hasn't been out of the house yet (it's way overkill for the gigs I've been doing recently), but I believe others have compared it to a 2x12". In terms of Vd, I think it's more like two 15s or two super 12s. I'll have to check it on the scale, but I believe it's around 35 pounds.

As for replacement drivers, what about Ciare? Iirc, Mike worked with them to design 5", 6" (or maybe it was 6.5"), and 8" drivers for all his cabs, and Ciare added them to their standard catalog. They were available through usspeaker.com last I looked, iirc. Would these work as potential replacements for his older designs as well? I suspect yes because I don't remember him redesigning the wave guides based on these speakers.

Good info man. I played the 28 and 46 in plenty of clubs with no PA support. The original 48 could handle any outdoor gigs my 15/15/66 cabs,(one I built, one from LDS) could. But there is no need to try to convince anyone. They are not for sale anymore. Hope the BigE guys get em goin again. But I have two cabs so I am keeping them till it's time to ride off into the sunset.

Sorry, I'm not trying to sound like a salesman. There are other great options out there, including current production cabs with customer support. I just thought passing up MAS based on weight was probably a mistake because I don't think I've ever used anything that beats them pound-for-pound. I also remember being rather confused about the weight, prices, and all the little speakers when I first encountered them years ago.

I can only imagine the physical impact of that 4 x 8 with your Fender amp (or my Reeves!). :bassist:

Yes indeed, was great! I decided in my 70's to sell some things I was not using much and am down to a Mesa WD 800 and have a Kustom 500. I have been thinking about how to get tube goodness back though and might if I ever get a busy gig schedule here in Podunk. Oh well I am good for now. Back when I hosted a MAS GTG attended by a decent number of folks, no one even wanted to plug in to the Superbassman on top of the 48 LOL. They were all looking at the small footprint lighter weight stuff.

You are absolutely right. I went to a gig once with two Mas setups, and remembered our drummer had met with the owner and me pre gig. It was a high ceiling resonant club and the very experienced drummer simply clapped his hands and heard the resonance. He said there was no worries re playing loud. Even though I initially rolled in a Flex 210 and a 46 I just put the 46 on a milk crate on stage and locked the Flex in the car. After the gig the owner slapped me on the back and said the bass sounded great. Mas speaker size is not comparable to most. MVW is real.

I get that some of the cabs are heavy; I've switched over to using either Baer ML115s or AK H1505/TC115 because they are easier to carry than either my Bodai 112s or my 66.

That being said, nothing I've ever played brings the combination of beef, slam, depth, clarity, and dispersion that my 66 does (though the TC115 comes close).

If you're referring to me letting go of the Shaw, I agree. Kevin doesn't make them anymore! I still have one of the Flex 110's for my reference cabinet at home, but I sold the other to a player from Kansas City. I prefer my Bodai cabs and their rear-firing tweeters. The highs disperse better and are not as intense as the direct-radiating tweets. :cool:
