Big Muff Volume Question

Hey everybody, I have a feeling this is a dumb question - but I know you guys know the answers!

I recently posted in a thread about effects loops http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=669530&highlight=

and BongoMania helped me out a bunch and I now run my pedal board in front of my amp and not through the effects loop. The question that i have though has to do with my EHX BBM.. it is extremely hot being between the bass and the amp now - before when it was in the effects loop i could have it up around 12 or 3.. now at 7 or 8 is so hot that it overpowers everything.....

Do you guys have any suggestions for me? Thanks so much, I always appreciate your advice!

Welcome to my world.

In my current band I am constantly jumping back and forth between clean and dirty sounds, and the only solution I've come up with is to be quick about dialing down the on-board volume right as I'm stepping on the BBM.

Let me know if you are curious about my specific settings, but I imagine they would differ depending on the rig.I'm using a Fender active jazz and I exclusively use the blended setting on the BBM (since that's the best way to cut through).

Yo Goatman, funny that is a nickname of mine as well! Thanks for the advise... yeah the BBM is SOOO much hotter in between the bass and the amp, it's almost unusable. When it it was in my effects loop it was always at about the same volume as the clean signal. Is this normal??

By hot do you mean output volume or gain amount?

If it's volume....

Just set the pedal volume to unity gain or so. So that when on the pedal's output is the same as you uneffected sound. This is why they have these things called knobs...

I run a lot of pedals so volume balance it is a big deal to me and I spend a lot of time dialing in everything to where my volume changes very little inless I stack like three dirt boxes.
And that is where a comp or limiter comes in, if things get to far out you can use a comp or limiter to force everything to be at the volume you want.

Thanks muddfuzz.. yeah my volume on the pedal is at like 1 (7 oclock) and it's extremely loud, like way way over the clean volume level. Is it normal to have that setting so low (lowest setting, 1 or 7 oclock) to achieve "unity gain"?

Big Muffs have a boost as part of the design so they are loud pedals, I don't remember mine being that loud when I had it but EHX has never been the most consistent even if of late they have been better, you might have just got a loud one...

Yes, that might be the case. Loud at 7 o'clock :eek: that's crazy. Are you sure there's nothing else in the chain "heating" up the signal?

Hmmm... I don't see anything there that would give you any extra volume. The longest of shots would be the buffer in the boss but I doubt it.

Hmmm.... does the volume on the BBM work all the way in it's sweep or does it max out before it is turned all the way up?

I got a Russian BMP once that was the opposite of that where the volume didn't come on intill almost 12 oclock.
