From Carey's FB:

Some big changes coming to the way we/I make basses and guitars. Hide has moved home and Josh has moved on (hopefully to build his own instruments). Mo will still be around to do repairs (send them in!), but soon I'll be building all the instruments totally by myself. At a very slow pace. 1-2 per month. We'll still take orders for Nordy's, NX's, and NJ's and they'll be scheduled at a pace of 1 per month. Prices will adjust accordingly.
Then, I'll build what I want to build. Let the creative spirit take me where it wants to go. And make the results available for purchase when completed. I really want to get started on acoustic guitars and I have some pretty crazy bass ideas. I'll try to blog all the progress here and on our site. Should be a lot of fun.

As much as I love the Classic series basses Carey's been making, I've been blown away by the few NX's I've seen. This seems like a big step up for Carey to make the basses he's really wanted to for a while now. The announcement of opening up the shop to repairs is big for me. Amazing repair and mod possibilities.

Carey reshaped my baseball bat Fender Am Dlx J V neck, and turned it into the best playing bass I had ever owned. They did a refret on my Tyler 5. Brilliant work!

This all seems like a logical step forward. Good luck to Carey and crew.

wow, that is really exciting to hear! wat to go Carey, it says alot about his commitment to his craft, that he's stepping back from larger scale production to devote himself to his creative goals. I'm sure the results will be incredible, as is pretty much everything that comes out of his shop.

It didn't the first time :). Carey actually started out doing his custom stuff and then shifted gears to focus on the Nordy line while the customs took a backseat. As far as I could tell, pickup production was unaffected by the change.

I see this as good news. As badass as the Nordys are, Carey's customs are really something else and a welcome addition to the world of custom basses. An NX is something of a dream bass of mine. Looking forward to seeing what happens, I'm sure it'll be awesome.

The current Nordy line is fine, but I really loved Carey's earlier custom work--my old SC5 was a spectacular instrument! It will be exciting to see what Carey comes up with as he gets back into "letting the creative spirit take me where it wants to go..."

That was a pretty cool bass you had. The wood covered pickups, especially DCs really got my attention.

I am a little sad. I love Carey's earlier work but his VP and VJ line allowed people on a budget to acquire basses that were way out of their budget at a much more affordable price line.

I have said it before and I will say it again his quality, build and tone were way much better then the prices he was charging and I am just happy I got my two! :)

Good luck to him and the crew in their future undertakings!

This is craziness! The guy has a hot name, he's right on the verge of being a bass building superstar, and he's scaling back to build handmade stuff? Crazy! I'd already have scoped out a Chinese factory to make my basses if I were him.
