Big Problem M Pulse & Powerhouse 1000 cab

When "not playing loudly" as Vegasfan said, it shouldn't clip unless there was a severe amount of low end boost, which apparently there wasn't. Before it made the "crackling, blaring noise" was it played at TOF (threshold of farting) for any length of time? Of course, if it was a floor model at Guitar Center it probably spent a lot of time in the TOF zone before you got it. :hmm:

The volt inputs here in Europe is 230 Volt. So there might be some issues concerning this but I think you can do some easy things with the electronics to sort this out, dont know about that though. I atleast know that my mesa is built for 230 volt, so I guess that manufacturers make different volt options. Hope things work out for you vegasfan

Take GC and/or Mesa to small claims court for failure to provide a usable product. Most of the time the company will fail to show and even if they did, you began experiencing problems within the warranty period. I don't think that a judge would buy the "We only have a 30-day return for defective equipment" story from them. Small Claims court is user friendly and I have seen the Court order a till tap on a company until you get your refund - basically a policeman stands at the cash register and takes all cash for you, up to what the Court has ordered - pretty funny and NOT a good advertisement to customers.

If anybody gives you trouble, may as well sue 'em. Failure to provide a usable product? Look at the other side of the coin - the warranty is there for this very reason. Inevitably there will be defective products from every manufacturer. How about retaining some responsibility and handling the problem yourself?

This doesn't seem like a reasonable solution.

You need to explain your situation clearly to GC and Mesa directly. Don't leave or stop asking for service that pleases you until you get it. Be direct but not vulgar, or angry. State the problems you've had, state that you are not a pleased customer and that this much spending entitles you to some service beyond what they've done. The best thing you can do is be persistent and honest. Don't let them push you off until you are satisfied. If you get the pushoff from sales and front-line employees, don't leave, ask to speak with management (at GC and at Mesa). A young sales kid won't have the knowledge or power to make anything happen, but someone who is invested in the business' reputation and individual customer satisfaction will want you to leave happy.

I've been dealing with the manager and asst. mgr. of GC and a service rep. with Mesa. Time to go higher up, to district managers.
I'm not giving up and I've not been angry or vulgar. Although I did tell Guitar Center, if I have to sue Mesa, I will. Hopefully, they will do the right thing. But as of this writing, I'm not feeling the love.

Over the weekend, now my 15" in the cabinet is starting to shows signs of trouble. That means every element of that cabinet has had a problem.

The suggestion of maybe it's a problem with the head could be a valid point. I've asked the Mesa repair shop to check out the possibility, but they didn't do it. I'm going to call Mesa again in a few minutes and find out what the next step will be.
Thanks for all the input. It's really appreciated.

Sucks man.
I've never had a hitch with Mesa, ever. Their gear or their CS department. Always leave a message w/ somebody and in an hour or so, I get a call back.
I've even called for washers on a speaker input jack b/c I bought a cab used and they send like 20 of them- every version they have to make sure I got the right one, even though I told them which cab.

I didn't read past page 2, but did you buy this rig off the "showroom" floor? That might have something to do with it, but not after it's replaced, but who knows. I see kids in GC all the time hooking up crap with instrument cables to another amp, etc.. I always ask for something new in box and if they want to still sell it to me, they better order it for me and I'll come pick it up.

Sucks tho cause I've loved all my past Mesa gear.

Greetings, Glad to hear your Mesa gear held up well.
Yes, mine was purchased off the GC floor. I wanted one out of the box but this sounded great and they assured me it was covered by warranty so any challenges were covered...yeah I won't fall for that one again.
I've purchased thousands and thousands of dollars of equipment from GC and have had only problems with 2 things. This rig and a Fostex 8 hard drive Changed the Fostex to Sonar 5 cakewalk. Still having challenges getting this Mesa straightened out.

I would not second guess Mesa, but I sure as hell would second guess Avatar(avatar)!;)

where is your avatar? oh wait u don't support the site.

Second guess Avatar Speakers all you want, this problem would never continue like this, they know everything is word of mouth.

Anyways I updated my Avatar to be badass now.

Did this issue with mesa get resolve???

No, more problems! The GC rep suggested breaking in the new 10" speakers by playing the hell out of them this past weekend. I was so busy, I could only play for a couple of hours. Now the 15" speaker, the last remaining part not replaced in this cabinet, is now making strange sounds. I'm supposed to audition for a new band tonight and who knows
what's going to happen then. Hard to concentrate on making music when this thing is farting, crackling, and flubbing.

Yeah again I didn't mean it to be rude at all, it's just I mean I've seen a kid, prolly 13 or 14, take off this $2500 Warwick Thumb, plug it into and amp and just bash the hell outta it into this little GK 112 combo and practically fry the thing. And you know later that afternoon the sales guy is gonna be pushing it, saying it's in perfect shape, no problems, etc.. I've even seen kids (as mentioned above) take instrument cables to try and hook up different heads to the cabs. Not good.

My guitarist/singer has a similar problem with his Martin. I forget the model, but it's about the $1500 version. Pwned every Taylor in there (there is no comparison acoustically, IMO). However, he's had problems w/ the input jack shorting out since day 1. Had it fixed at GC, other guitar shops, pretty much everywhere except sending it Martin. I've never seen an input jack cause this much grief, and on such an amazing guitar. We now just mic it as it sounds better anyways, but he's going to send it to them.
You just never know what you're gonna get sometimes off the floor.

No problem I didn't take your comment as being rude. You'd be surprised what I've seen in GC. (A $1800 bass with knobs broken off, jacks so loose they won't hold the connection, etc.) But when GC tells me it's going to be months before they get a new one in a box and the only other cabinet by Mesa was smaller, I took what was supposed to be the cream of the crop. In fact I made mention of the fact that it had been on the floor to the GC Asst. Mgr. when all of this was first coming down and they figure, it's a new cab. because it wasn't sold and removed from the floor before I got it.

Vegasfan, I feel your pain. Like I said in my earlier posts, I had a problem with an Aguilar amp that took me quite a bit of time to resolve.

I'm not sure if I made myself completely clear on this, but as another poster on this thread accurately put it, you have a product that showed signs of a defect within the warranty period. As I said before, Guitar Center's 30-day "warranty" is irrelevant; what matters is the length manufacturer's warranty. Please speak to whoever you need to speak to at Mesa to get this resolved -- they are required by contract to fix your problem. Do not accept "we've done everything we could" as an answer, and do not sell your gear at a loss. I know it can be tough on the phone sometimes to deal with manufacturer's reps, since they can be defensive of their product to an extent. But just remember: You bargained for an amp and a speaker with a specific sound -- a sound that you personally heard on the GC floor before buying -- and that is not what you have now.

If you need to file a lawsuit, do it as a last resort -- but do it if you must. I am a little puzzled by another poster's observation that you need to take greater responsibility for this problem. Sounds to me like you've done just about everything you possibly could. Insist on speaking with the highest-ranking Mesa rep; I'm sure they'll do you right eventually if you are persistent enough.

Just to be clear - I can be a litle thick sometimes - the Mesa rep you talked to: you yourself spoke to someone at Mesa HQ, or do you refer to speakiing wiht an employee at a shop that was a Mesa authorized service center? An "authorized tech" could be blowing smoke out his @--. If you havent actually talked to a Mesa tecxh at their facility, do so. If you have, well i guess you're s-----d. Sorry.

I did talk to the Mesa Service Rep. at Mesa HQ. That was after the replacement speaker blew while in the local authorized repair center. The local repair guy...nice guy by the way, put in a call to the Mesa HQ also saying hey, this is the deal. The replacement speaker just did the same thing, it blew before we got it out the door. That's when Mesa said to switch to the 300 watt speakers. After replacing the 100 watts with the 300 watts the sound was messed up, no highs, mids are muddy, then Mesa rep. said we've done all we can do.
Now it's up to Guitar Center. Guitar Center is saying it's not their problem. Mesa needs to step up to the plate and make it right.

So now I've got to go over all the local people I've been dealing with and get them to replace this entire cabinet or head & cabinet because it keeps on happening.

Update:
I placed a call to Mesa again Monday, Aug. 7 '06. They called me back and very nicely asked me what I wanted to do. I told them send me a new head and cabinet, there is definately something wrong with this setup and I don't like the sound of the new speakers.

They asked if the repair center had checked out the amp. I told Mesa the repair center said they had.

Mesa said to take the cabinet & head back to their authorized repair center. Mesa wants to make sure the repair center has actually checked out the amp. Then they will have the repair center send it back to HQ and go from there.
I'll keep giving updates as they come. Again thanks for all the support from TalkBass readers.

Hi,Truckin88 and everyone else,

I'm still having problems with this cab. Today I took it back to my authorized repair center because now it's making a strange crackling sound when at very low volumes.
We think it's the fifteen or maybe a crossover that's causing the trouble. They said they will check out the head now (I was told previously that they had already checked the amp head, but now they say they never did.)
The rep. at Mesa told the repair center people to check it out and if they can't resolve the problem, then to ship it to headquarters.
Had a long talk with the repair people and they are surprised this set has had so many problems. They tell me this is the top of the line when compared to most bass systems. They feel confident that Mesa will come through.

I don't understand what you think is wrong with the head. You haven't mentioned any problems with it.

We didn't think there was a problem with the head. But, the fact that now every speaker including the tweeter has had a problem and now they are replacing the 15" as well, the manuf. thinks it may be a problem with the amp head.

They are running out of options for solutions. But this is what they are trying at the moment. I guess it's better than saying "this is all that we can do".

So wish me luck and thanks again for the input.
