Yep. Just got a Squire PJ Vintage Modified Jaguar and it is the one bass that fits the description of this thread. Its a great playing bass that I think will have a solid place in my arsenal forever. I'm so glad I went with the $200 squire instead of $650 warmoth bits.

To be fair, It needed a bridge and (at least the bridge )pickup replacement. I am undecided on the Audere at the moment, the factory preamp was all I needed IMO.

Squier CV P Bass. After a sour experience with a Squier VM Fretless Jazz, I swore I'd never own another Squier, but then I tried this beast. I've always played fretless Jazz basses, but this one just blew me away! The neck's only .1 inches thicker than a Jazz, and plays like a dream (once sanded down). The build quality's at least as good as the MIM Fenders, too.

My Maestro Stingray clone ... I paid about $130 for it. When I got it it had some cosmetic and fit and finish flaws, the wiring was messed up, it needed a string tree and fret leveling. But once I fixed everything it is an awesome player. I added a string tree, a battery box, and put in a 4 band audere preamp. The balance knob treats the 2 coils like 2 different pickups.

I just love playing this bass.

Was when I opened the case for the first view of 'my custom Kinal' MK-21. That pretty headstock in my avatar was supposed to be natural wood, not dyed. The neck was supposed to be oil finished - he put a clearcoat on it. When I contacted Mr. Kinal he told me that he "lost his notes". Instead of contacting me to verify specs, he finishes it like he thinks it should be. Good craftsman, yes. Smart business person, no. For a pleasant surprise - how much bass for the money you get when you buy a Squier. I've read a lot about them on TB, but I'm from Missouri, the "Show Me" state. I bought a Jaguar humbucker special online for use as a vehicle for a pair of Thunderbucker pickups which should arrive in a few days. With the exception of the nut (a plastic joke), everything else is fine and more than I expected for $190 shipped.

Add my name to the list of folks who have been totally surprised by the recent Squiers, specifically the Deluxe Jazz Active V.

I actually created a thread about this 4 years ago(!) that is still going strong. Over 600 posts and folks are still as blown away by this bass as I was: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/squier-deluxe-jazz-active-v-unbelieveable-bass-374320/

I have since moved on to a better J-Bass but I would still not hesitate to recommend this bass to anyone.

As far as a positive surprise: Carvin SB5000. I had wanted one for a while and bought one used without playing it. I had heard good things from SB owners and all the bad things from people who just like to bag on Carvin, so I went in with an open mind. Far and a way the best combo of versatility and playability I have ever had.

Also, the SX basses are surprisngly good, especially for the money.

Steinberger Bass was a big disappointment to me! I just hated the feel I was really surprised I had wanted to play one from the first time I saw it and when I did I could not stand the neck just couldn't get comfortable with it. Now in the other direction the SX P bass I picked up for $75.00 on Craigslist is very nice great sound and the neck is very close to my Fender P
