Bill Wyman or Keith Richards on bass

To walk into a session with the Wolf and Hubert and play with that much authority and confidence is what tells you that he and Charlie knew what they had together.
To complicate this thread a bit more: give me Daryl jones playing wyman or Richards parts any day of the week. Daryl just transcends. Check out his bass solo from the recent shows on Miss You. Wyman leaving the stones and being replaced by Daryl jones would be like me splitting up with my wife to have her get together w Hugh Jackman. U know what I mean? Wyman must have felt some pain after hearing who his replacement was
I'm in the opposite camp--I'd rather hear Bill back in the Stones any day! I've seen 'em live with both--I dunno, Daryl's undoubtedly and excellent player, but Bill just has a unique feel and vibe even if he might not be as versatile as Daryl. Daryl, as great a player as he is, doesn't have that "specialness" for me...

I still prefer Wyman's ability to be in the right spot to move the music. There are cool basslines played by others but, Wyman had this knack for playing with a bass feel that worked without sounding so obvious.

Don't know who really played bass on 12x5 album but 2120 South Michigan Ave is really great. There is a flavor and sound the early Stones albums have that the newer ones don't have. I know analog and production has changed but I always thought the band really changed it's sound after Jones died.

I just watched most of Gimme Shelter (the documentary) over the weekend, and I was really impressed by Bill Wyman's playing on Satisfaction - he was loud and clear, present, great tone, and swinging HARD, pushing/pulling that beat quite nicely with Charlie Watts (much more so than Keith, as a matter of fact). A real asset to the band, in ways I hadn't been hearing on the records - whomever is playing those parts.
The Stones overall have always been very underrated as players because they were always about making the song work above individual heroics. Bill was/is much better than everyone gives him credit for.
My personal fave is We Love You.
That being said, Keith knows how to groove on bass too, and Ronnie Wood absolutely killed it on those early Jeff Beck records.

That is an understatement. Wood had a very "guitar style" of bass playing but put down some of the best grooves in the late 60"s.
I always said "Truth" is the best album Led Zepplin never put out. Zepplin always seemed very contrived compared to the "Truth"

Yeah Ronnie on the beck stuff is some of the best playing I've ever heard. He should have stayed on bass.
I totally agree. Love Daryl, but for the Stones I'll take Bill any day over Daryl, Keith, Mick, and any other bassist put together.
That iso'd track of Bill playing Gimme Shelter is awesome. Sounds like he's using that cheapo Dallas bass that he defretted. Man, that thing recorded great. Great part, too. Some people think Bill wasn't that great, but I think they're loonies. "Miss You." Case closed.
Speaking of fretless, didn't Bill pretty much invent the fretless with his home degree job?
I'll take Bill's playing in the Stones over any other too.
Daryl is superb, but I was brought up on those 1st 4 Stones albums & I love the feel Bill sits.
Everyone else that plays bass with em is undoubtedly bloody good, but I got my fave.

Keith Richards once said that Bill Wyman could "smoke" him on the bass any day of the week. After making that statement, Keith probably went and smoked something of his own.

This album is what finally sold me on Wyman and Watts as a rhythm section.
(And, for what it's worth, Ringo does a very credible job on a tune or two. He's billed as "Ritchie", if I remember correctly.)
I have vague memories of reading that Bill Wyman defretted a bass way back when. Could be a phantom memory though... Change up: who played bass on *Undercover(of the night- possible mangled title)*?
On topic: For me, Wyman was the right man for the job- he just did it like no other, feel-wise.
Listen LONG and HARD to that isolated track of Gimme Shelter- That is what it is all about! Great playing.
I like how he hangs on the one note at the beginning even while the chords change, that kind of move takes guts and adds quite a bit to the music.
This is something to be said for getting a good line/groove going and then only altering it slightly with fills as you go through the song.
Whoever played bass on stray-cat blues is one of my absolute favorite Stone lines as well. was that KEEF or Mick?
