So I'm getting to know this new Cortobass...
The ergonomics are great. The nut is only 38mm but the neck has some depth and so doesn't feel too small. Zero neck dive, zero, balances perfectly. The strap peg on the back of the horn is unique but hangs the strap just right. 24 frets is more than I need. The oil finish feels great and smells nice too! Wooden knobs are a cool touch. Scott inlayed crushed turquoise in a vein of the mesquite wood for a touch of personality. The Lace single/hum pickups offer new to me tones...sort of J-bass vibe with the pair wide open, maybe a touch warmer. This is a good bass for funky articulate lines and without sounding hi-fi. The hum isn't particularly MMish, but the slap tone is great.
Oh, and this bass fits perfectly in a Mono electric guitar gig bag. I will probably not keep the full-sized bass gig bag that the bass came with because that bag is way longer than this bass.

I was about to order it in poplar when Scott mentioned that he had some nice walnut in for a $100 upcharge. I'm happy that I listened to him.

Well, folks, my Standard30+ didn't pass Scott's QC, so we're starting over. Scott has brought back the OG Corto and Corto 2, so I think I'm going to go with a Corto 2 unless somebody convinces me to get the standard one. While this means three more months of waiting, I'm pleased to be getting a bass that seems to be a bit of a step up from the Standard/Special.
The bass will be built by Scott's longtime partner Jake Goede. I've already been in contact with him, and he's starting on the neck this week.
So, three more months of checking progress reports every morning. My G&L is heavy, but it sounds good and I'm not playing out right now, so the wait will be tolerable.

Updated Features:
- Maple neck with maple fretboard and mesquite headstock cap (best neck I've ever played)
- 2-Piece Mesquite body - wild and rustic with turquoise void fills in the knot holes
- Tort Pickguard
- Chrome Hipshot hardware
- Middle Pickup: Fralin +5% wound Precision (the BEST P pickup I've ever had)
- Bridge Pickup: Widdershins Guitars Cauldron Humbucker (wired with a Parallel/Series switch by my buddy Nick Holcomb at Holcomb Guitars) - this pickup RIPS and I'm going to post clips on my Insta account.
Big changes seem to be happening at Birdsong. Jake Goede has taken over the production of the Corto and its 31" relatives while Scott is focusing on the 25.5" Sport basses built under his own name, not Birdsong's. I don't know what this means in terms of quality, but I see no reason to think it will be lower. One difference is that the necks will be built without the CNC work that was done at the Birdsong workshop, so the whole bass will be hand-carved.
It almost seems as if Scott sold/gave away Birdsong to Jake.

Trust me when I tell you, Jake making necks without CNC is a wonderful development. I just ordered a full scale 5 string from him last week, super excited about it. Here is a "Jake bass" and a Birdsong from Ben's collection that Scott brought me over Thanksgiving.

Oof…that's the first thing that came to mind…great news!!
I'm really happy that my Special30 didn't work out, and am very much looking forward to getting a Corto2. I like that it will be fully handmade in a one-person shop. I think that'll lengthen the wait a bit, but the bass will be a little more special.
