Bit of advice needed from the veterans

Hello there im just wondering really if anybody could offer objective advise as im looking to buy a head/cab set up I have my cabs sorted but wonder if you could suggest a head I have 2 contenders really :

BEHRINGER ULTRABASS BX4500H 450WATT

GENZ-BENZ SHUTTLE 6.0

looking at running cabs wise:

BEHRINGER ULTRABASS 4X10 SPEAKER
BEHRINGER ULTRABASS 1X15 SPEAKER

advise would help alot

also Im In New Zealand so yeah .

What impedance are the cabinets? I don't know about the Behringer but the Shuttle won't handle 2ohms. If you like the Shuttle tone you might consider a used Neo-Pak which will sound VERY similar and give you over 500W into 2 ohms...

+1 on all the "don't buy behringer" comments. A solid 4x10 with a good head can get you by in the club scene (at least where I'm from). You can always wait and save to get the matching 15" at a later time.

Hartke transporter and XL cabinets have become pretty affordable in the US....don't about your situation. IME, they are solid cabinets for the price.

If you had set this up as a poll, you'd find the results nearly unanimous: Genz-Benz over Behringer...hands down.

In general, it's a much better idea to buy quality components, then add to them as budget allows - rather than buy everything at once at the expense of quality. In other words, quality trumps quantity.

Do your research. The TalkBass "search" function is an excellent place to start.

I'll echo everything that's been said so far. Avoid the Behringer stuff if at all possible. One good cab with the Genz head will sound way better than both those cabs you've listed. Search around. Seriously, maybe look into a nice 2x12 cab, that would work like a champ.

Shuttle over the Behringer head, no question. And I'd be more scared of Behringer cabs than I would their heads. I've seen too many issues with drivers literally coming apart on Behringer equipment. If you are wanting to save money, go with Avatar or Carvin. At least you'll get a quality product that you can depend on. That's my opinion at least.

Cheap drivers are inefficient and not necessarily "musical": the response will be all over the place and they'll gobble immense amount of power leading to a wimpy, vague tone. The cab materials might also be cheap or badly assembled, leading to rattle, dead tweeter, etc.

You'd be better off buying used 115 and 210 of decent quality such as Peavey. Behringer is complete utter crap when it comes to speaker cabinets.

Either head is fine, but the GB will probably be vastly superior in terms of tone and power. But buy used if possible.

I own a Behringer combo amp BXL 1800A. I use it as a practice amp and for some occasional home recording. It sound pretty good at a low volume.

The positives of this amp is that it was cheap and feature rich.

The negative- one of the speaker leads from the amp to the cone was poorly soldered. It came loose and the amp stopped working. I repaired it myself... and learned how to solder in the process. :eek:

I am not sure how the Behringer 450 head is in regards to quality. When I was looking for a new head I did play through the same head and cabs in a shop here in New Jersey. The sound was "adequate". I ended up purchasing a Peavey Tour 450. Which was never even on my "short list" until the sales guy forced me to play through it. I am glad he did.

Does Hartke/Samson distribute in NZ? Hartkes Transporter line is a pretty good value priced cab. I have a 1x15 Transporter with a Carven speaker cone that I love...

I use and own behringer mixers... they are very good.

Hi, Booster. I am also in New Zealand and as a teacher have advised many of my students as to what gear to buy, as well as having seen many of their problems.If you can afford it go for the Shutttle, they are a fair price out here(comparatively speaking) but I would also urge you to consider the Markbass LM2. You may not realise that they have been available out here for a while through Jansen in Auckland. Google Jansen and you will see what I mean - they are also a very good firm to deal with. If possible try to compare the two, and also you will find plenty of comparisons on this site. One of my students plays a markbass through a SWR410 and loves it for rock. Hope this helps, Tim.
