I just sold my original Gray box version of the BoF made by Fred Bonte a few weeks ago. It could get very gnasty sounding (in a good way) if you wanted it to.

Black Cat Bass Octave Fuzz / Pole Master Comparison (too)

clifton, what bass do you use on these clips? Sounds fantastic.
I'm pretty sure it's the riff you keep playing, but you're convincing me to buy a lot more pedals (VT, pork loin...)

Thanks!! For the most recently clips - VT Bass, Black Cat, and Pole Master - I use a Schecter Model T. It's a P/J bass. I turn the P and J pickups all the way up and keep the tone knob near the middle. For the other clips I would use either my MusicMan or my Fender Jazz bass.

I thought it may have been the model t after reading your profile. I love the look of those basses. They're a bit hard to find these days. I forget, are they passive or active?
Passive. It's a great bass. I bought it here on TB. It's the black one with a maple fretboard.
Clifton - I've just been checking out the pole/cat comparissons - great clips and cant really tell much of a difference between the two pedals (which I guess is to be expected) - but what was your opinion between the two? got a favourite?

The Pole Master was my clear favorite prior to doing the clips/comparision. Now, the Black Cat has closed the gap.
The pedals are very similar, but here are the differences I've noticed.
1. The Bass Volume: On the Black Cat, you really need to put the bass volume at about 2 or 3 o'clock before you can tell it's in there. If you put it at anything less, you really don't have much of a bottom end. This is not the case for the Pole Master.
2. The Overall Gain: This may be somewhat related to (1) above. The Black Cat is a little lacking on the gain. The Pole Master has plenty of gain on tap. This isn't necessarily a bad thing for the Black Cat because you don't have to worry about a huge volume jump when you enage the pedal. However, the additional gain makes the Pole Master just sound so good on certain settings.
3. Consistency: The following statements were my thoughts before I did the comparison. Now, I'm not so sure, but I'll throw it out there. The Black Cat on the whole is a more consistent pedal. All of the settings sound good. The Pole Master, on the other hand, has some settings that sound okay and other's that sound amazing. After doing the comparison though, I was really happy with both pedals.
4. Price: The Pole Master is $100 cheaper. I suspect the reason for this is because the Pole Master is a faithful reproduction of the old BrassMaster while the maker of the Black Cat has tweaked the old design somewhat. This is purely a guess on my part. I'm pretty sure the Black Cat has been tweaked. I think I read this. I have no idea about Bogdan. He could have tweaked it as well.
Conclusion:
I've really only given the Pole Master a chance in my band. So, I would say it's my favorite at the moment. However, I need to give the Black Cat a shot. The band is on a break right now for the holidays. Once we get back together, I'll start using the Black Cat and report back and put up some clips.

cheers for the comparrison - the price on the bogdan was just too good to pass up. on a similar note - does anyone else find the crowther Prunes&Custard to be a little similar too? I dont think its based on the Brassmaster, but it has similar controls (a mix and overall instead of separate volumes, but it does have two flick switches) and a wetter/'synthier' sound
I've never played a real BrassMaster. But, it does have lower gain than the Pole Master.
I thought you had a Pole Master on the way.
I've owned two Assmasters (si and double ge) and currently have a Prunes & Custard, and I do find some similarities there. Obviously, there are lazers in the P&C, but the sharp character and clean cut-off of notes certainly reminds one of the Brassmaster circuit. The P&C almost feels like a Brassmaster-style fuzz and a quick, synthy filter in one box.
Just emailed bogdan, and he told me $125 shipped to US.
Also I'm assuming both of these pedals aren't friendly to active preamps?
I'll do some quick clips with my MusicMan. I'll try to get them up tonight.
