Sure, there are lots of threads about these basses, but I've just bought one, and there is not one place that tells me where to buy a new pickguard for it. Does it take a Fender Mexico pickguard or a squier Mexico pickguard?

Sorry guys, but I really need to know. I"m assuming its a fender mexico one, as the black label basses were made with mexican bodies, but i'd love to know before i order one

I don't think these have been out long enough for anyone to really know. They're actually called Blacktop basses/guitars. Not Black Label.
Nope, not blacktop. I mean the Fender basses with the black logo. Google it, its kind of an oddity.

I believe you are talking about a P Bass made in the early '90's. It's made in Mexico. You could email Fender with the serial # and a photo or two - they may be able to help you out.
You may have to go the custom route. Google custom pickguards and you'll find there are a few companies that provide this service.

Thanks! I tried uploading a picture, but the resolution was wrong, and i only had a minute. I'll try to give more info next time.
The black logo ones were part of the 'Traditional' series. There was also some Squier series ones
I see references to them lumped in with "black label" Strat guitars. One entry said they were made from '90-'93.
I have one (a '94) and had someone use the template for the MIM standard pickguard for a custom one that fits perfectly. Then in a fit of boredom, I took the original white pickguard from my American Standard and put it on there, and all the screw holes lined up perfectly.

And finally, I'm using an Allparts black pickguard on my AmStandard that has the MIM layout (no notch for the trussrod at the body) and that fits fine too..

Nah, they went on til at least '97. I remember seeing them in the old Fender Frontline magazine in the 1997 edition.
Black labels were supposed to have been made in Mexico from over stock US bodies and necks. They were assembled, painted, and the electronics were all Mexican. They were all Fender, but some said Fender and in smaller letters Squier series... but they were MIM Fenders.
I'm looking at a bass that has a MN
serial prefix but states "Made in the USA"

Bruce, your bass would probably be what is called an AMERICAN TRADITIONAL .. they were only made a few years, probably '96-99 range, and primarily for the export market ... they were basically MIM components assembled in US ... should be the poplar body, used on MIM Black Label versions of these at the time ... most of these said 'Tradional Series' at the end of the headstock ... not a lot of info available on these, I have seen a few J's, and they used the one piece pickguard with strat knobs, but I don't think I actually have seen any P's ... but then I am not really looking for them

So makes the quality of a U.S Fender with black logo and squire series. Thanks, any more info I,m still interested in one!
I have one of these. Traditional Black Label P-basses. They are quite unique and sound great. A very traditional P bass tone. No pun intended. Got it for just over 500. Going to use it as a mod project. Throw some new tuners. New Fender Hi Mass bridge. Flats. Vintage style strap buttons. Maybe grab the Dominger pickup or custom 60s pickup.
