Geezer Crushes it. He's the real deal and every bit as good as JPJ just totally different. I still have to give it to Led Zeppelin because it's what I cut my bass playing teeth on.

I love both bands but for me it's SABBATH(Ozzy years).
Zeppelin were one of the biggest rock bands in history but Sabbath invented metal.
It's 2013 and there's new bands popping up every day who have been mainly influenced by those first 3 Black Sabbath albums.
Also, they definitely ARE in the same league. Why would we be having this discussion if they weren't? They're the two big early heavy rock bands.

Being hatched as an undefatigueable rebel, I was cutting my ten year old bass chops with Geezer daily in 1971. I copped every one of his lines. Bass lessons indeed. The Lemon Song came a bit later in my development, but I love that simple blues groove.

Major Metal, this rebel beleives it to be an unfair comparison.

Black Sabbath - rebellious and began a whole genre of music. ( as the last poster said)

Led Zepplin - more musical, easier on most ears, but arguably doesn't have a genre of music who STILL imitates it.

For the record, I am "bi", I love them both, but to compare simply, i.e, " who is best" misses the beauty of their differences, which I barely touched upon.

And I REFUSE to answer your poll, on "religious" grounds. ;) :bassist:

it's fairly obvious that most of the Zep groupies are old people!:hiding:

because,... it's also fairly obvious that Sabbath is a huge influence on alot of young Metal bands, IMHO. BTW, Iommi invented the Power Chord, so Black Sabbath is the clear winner in my mind. i owned more of their music and also found many of LZ's songs too long or just boring! lyrically,... B.S. was more interesting, except when Zep was doing a Blues rip-off,... (i meant to say "cover"!:hiding:)

Hmmm... I think Dave Davies of the Kinks invented the power chord... and Pete Townshend perfected it.

Anyway, this poll was fun and painless for me, because I don't have much emotional attachment to either Zep or Sabbath. I voted for Zep, because I think they're a bit more musically interesting.

Hey I'm a funk guy and I'm old (57) but I grew up in an era where we listened to all kinds of music non-stop. For me Black Sabbath. Fits my outlook, personality, rawness,quirkyness etc. Zep was good as well but if I have to pick between the two Black Sabbath. Oh lawd yea!!!!! The question was what is your preference not which is better. Of course Led Zep had (seemingly) better musicians and their compositions were more complex. I even played in a Led Zep theme band before they were called such a thing when I was in college but prefer Black Sabbath.

Awesome tune! But they do have a ton of other funky (or at least funk inspired) songs. Check out the Presence album for more of that; tons of funky stuff on that one (and my personal fave album!)
Back to the thread itself, I love me some Sabbath, but Zeppelin is KING (IMO)!!! I give full credit to Ozzy & Co. for essentially inventing metal, but Zep is definitely the more influential overall. How many bands tried emulating their riffs over the years? How many Bonzo beats were "borrowed" by hip hop acts?
These are definitely 2 of the most important rock bands of all-time, but my vote is for my favorite band of all-time, the Mighty Led Zeppelin! (of course, the 1st bass line I ever learned was Dazed And Confused!)

I went with Sabbath. They've been a huge influence in my life.
Grew up with Zeppelin, love their first four albums, definitely one of the best bands of all time but I had to go with Sabbath.
I can't go a week without listening to Sabbath, they're that huge of a band for me.
Ozzy or Dio, don't care which.

Another vote for Black Sabbath (with Ozzy, still never got around to listening to much of Dio). That first album was like nothing that came before it. Sabbath in general was so dark and atmospheric. It was all cohesive, with no one over-playing or wanking out. LZ had a few songs that I like, but I just can't get into them.

It's no secret than Zeppelin has a history of Blatantly or indirectly stealing the music of others and calling it their own...

Influential to whom?

Sabbath Originated a sound and a Genre...they are the starting point the BIRTH place...They were so influential in the development of metal as to be a defining force in the style.

Led Zeppelin simply re-worked and REGURGITATED american delta blues music!

Black Sabbath took that traditional blues in a new direction, and gave birth to a a whole damn genre of music that continues to attract millions of fans and inspire new bands over 40 years later.

Members of bands like Godsmack, Machine Head, Static X, Megadeth, System of a Down, Pantera, Primus, Slayer, Soulfly, Sepultura, Hed(Pe), Monster Magnet, Biohazard, White Zombie, Ministry, C.O.C., Iron Maiden, Faith No More, Type O Negative, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Korn, Venom, Fear Factory, Sleep, SlipKnot, Disturbed, Kyuss, Orange Goblin, Spiritual Beggars......etc., etc., have all gone on record as saying if it wasn't for Sabbath they wouldn't exist!

There is a Whole Genre of music 43 years later that is devoted to emulating or trying out do (Be more Sabbath than Sabbath) what Sabbath started in 1968

again my vote is for Sabbath hands down any day of the week

If i were marooned on a desert island the disc that would be by my side would be We sold our Souls for Rock-N-Roll!

I'm a Sabbath fan boy no doubt...Geezer is the reason I play a bass today....but IMHO Sabbath had a much larger impact in the scheme of things

Hell i even named my little hobby bass building company after Geezer in a fashion (Bonus points if you can tell me why..lol)
