I always wondered about this bass line. Found some info on wiki: One aspect of the song listeners have frequently noted is the tune's distinctive fretless bassline. While a common belief holds that the melody was played using an actual fretless bass guitar, Myles' bassist for the rest of her self-titled album, Steve Webster, acknowledged in an online discussion forum that he did not perform the bassline on "Black Velvet" himself; rather, it was Tyson who played the riff on a synthesizer, using a fretless bass sample.[8]

Groovy fill have liked it for years. But doesn't sit under the fingers that well , so maybe no surprise it's a keyboard player?

I'm still getting over Things That Make You Go Hmmm. That should have been on bass... And all the M People stuff. Couldn't they afford bass players?

So, what's the best way to recreate that tone live? Obviously a fretless bass, but what else? Bridge pickup? A little dirt? Octave? Heavy compression? Some people have mentioned delay, as I hear it there was some delay added just at the fills probably in post-production, but the rest of the bass line sounds very dry and defined to me.
