Blown SWR Super Redhead

The Super Redhead is just not a very powerful combo... but it sounds AWESOME. Anyway I blew the 2 pas 10" drivers and I need to replace them. Anyone know who sells them? Or maybe some better speakers even?

I have from more than one person that combo wasn't meant to handle all of the watts it pushed out to the point where my local music store "hides" them until someone asks about them.

I believe you can get replacements from SWR (fender) for it but if you plan on using without an extension buy some super powered 10's from Dave at Avatar.

The speakers in the Redhead can handle the amp's power because they almost never melt the voice coil. I've never heard of a single case of a melted voice coil in one.

All of the damaged speakers I've ever heard from them are from over-excursion, which means the operator was asking more loud low end from the little 2x10 combo than it is capable of pushing.

I've been using my Super Red Head for more than 10 years, and love it. If I play bigger venues, I usually line in through the PA. That being said, I replaced my stock PAS with a pair of Eminance, and now love it more. I also use a Schroeder mini 12 for an extention.

I was playing my ET Pedulla Thunderbuzz 6 and really pushing the low notes. I should have known better, but then again, your not really a bass player until you bust up some speakers.:bassist: Again, the Super Redhead is a really great sounding box, just not loud. Which speakers are going to give me the best response and volume? Bassconbeatz... can you give an performance evaluation as to why you prefer the eminence?

My speaker reconer said the same thing, and that was with a vast selection of speakers right behind him. I have blown so many PAS 10's that I've lost count. I no longer use SWR. Interestingly, I had an eden generation Goliath that was rated lower a wattage, but it seemed deeper and louder. Those speakers have huge magnets and didn't blow. Were those PAS?

I went from the Redhead to the Eden Metro for just that reason. Not enough bottom end and it could not keep up with my needs. Amazing sound...though.

I moved to the Eden Metro and the D210XST to cover the low B string and push enough volume out.

Just a Thought.

SWR has no clue as to who makes their speakers. I have a cast iron PAS in my 2004 SR. I was pushing it testing out a Eden 410xlt 4 ohm, running at 2 ohm. Not good. Just cost me $80 X 2 on re-coning my speakers. The only reason I'm reconing them is that I may sell the 2004 Super Redhead. If I was keeping it the new eminence bp 102 would be my next choice. FYI the PAS BG1080C# has an 8 right next to it. looks like 8 ohm to me. Other tech's also agree with this statement. SWR? I love my RedHead but the blush is off the rose with these guys.

i gigged with an nv610 4 ohm as an extension cab (for a combined 2 ohm load), and it sounded glorious.

it definitely seemed to take a lot of stress off of the combo's 2x10's because i could back off of the volume knob a lot more to get the same volume with just the combo alone. plus, i didn't get that speaker clipping/farting at max volume hitting the B string. (with just the combo alone)

I have an Eden 410xlt and a cheapo PA head (waiting for my wt550b to arrive). Sounds nice, but...

Sat an SWR RedHead on top of that, turned the horn all the way up on the RedHead and all the way down on the 410xlt, EQ'ed the cheapo PA head for lows and the RedHead for mids and highs, then ran the RedHead unbalanced direct out into the cheapo PA head. Plugged my bass into the RedHead and OMG it sounds great. Can't wait to replace the PA head with the Eden wt550b when it arrives.

The only drawback I've found so far is there are so many knobs on both amps it's easy to get an ugly tone and kind of tricky to get a perfect tone. Fun to play with, though!

Send the speakers to Orange County Speaker Repair in Garden Grove, CA. Not knowing where you're from, you may have a reconer closer to you. That is the cheapest and best way to fix your problem. Replacements will cost you $100 each over the cost of a recone and you get a new lease on life for little money. If you want them to sound great after the recone, break them in with a 30Hz sine wave set at 10 watts for 12 hours. You can do a search on speaker break-in here on TB.

Word to the wise: bass frequencies don't really start coming together until several feet in front of the amp. The low end you're hearing on stage as you're EQ'ing is nowhere near the same low end frequencies the audience is hearing 20, 30, 40, 50 feet in front of your amp. Borrow a wireless setup and go out in front several feet and you'll see that what you think is a lack of low end in front of your amp might be perfect EQ to the audience. If you feel you need more low end, add another cab to the equation. I have an SWR Super Redhead and I always add an 8 ohm Goliath Jr. III for outdoor gigs. Indoors I'm fine with the combo alone. It has plenty of power, but you have to know how to use it. If your venue is that big, DI out into the PA. I don't base my EQ on what I'm hearing in front of the amp, but what the audience and the band is hearing from the amp. The sound guy can take care of everything else.
