My roommate Mike K (Fabulous T-birds, Marcia Ball) turned me onto Buddy's Guy's "A Man & the Blues" record. Each song has its own special line and turnaround - a fantastic lesson. Then, of course, you are led into all that Junior Wells material and you just go nuts.

Careful, 'cause with no mower in Hawaii the blues can lead to jungle consumption.

Actually I think that some of that trad Hawaiian Island music has got as much blues as the music from the Mississippi Delta.

1. Teenagers cannot have the Blues. They ain't fixn to die. Adults play the Blues. In Blues, adulthood means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

2. Blues is not a matter of color. It is a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot have the blues. Sonny Liston could have the blues.

3. I don't care how tragic your life is or may have been, if you own a computer, you cannot have the Blues.

just make sure your piano player is hip to it...or better yet, just follow your piano player and you'll sound fine.
