I have been trying expand my blues understanding and have come across some non 1-4-5 songs that stretch me: Stormy Monday and Pink's Misery both with 5# mid way thru the progression.

Can you guys suggest some others that would expand my blues skills?

Look up "Bird Blues" on the net or what is called "The Bird Changes"......

Try looking up "Ragtime Blues"......study the chords/changes used.....

Have a look at what George Gershwin did with incorporating blues formats..

It doesn't have to be fast to be good though...it's more about the chord progressions and substitutions....

If you stray out of the yard a bit and get away from straight basic major-chord 12-bar and into some of the jazz/blues subs and chords it will sound very "bluesy".

Check out Steely Dan's "Chain Lightning" also for example.........a nice twist on applied blues..

Study "Tritones" as applied to blues.....

Using minor chords gives the blues a darker, more moody feel than using sweet majors.

Look up "Basic Jazz Blues Progressions".........it's all about chord progressions really (not how fast it's played)

Yes ...you need to break out of the 1-4-5 rut to progress....
