For a recent performance of Big Noise From Winnetka(again) I went back to study the original. I found a video of Mr. Haggart and Mr. Bauduc doing the tune in what was essentially the original version(some of the later band versions with the timeless lyrics are hilarious). The fun thing I noticed watching this video is that Mr. H has a piece of what looks like cardboard under the A string crossing the bridge. I guess the players even back then had to do some quick fixes on the gig.
As a personal footnote, I played several dates in the early 70s with Bob Crosby, who was the bandleader the two men played for officially back in the 30s-40s. He was a decent guy who would always tell us( a local pickup band) to tell anyone who asked where the band played next what we were supposed to say. It was always some large city, even though there was no "next gig". We were supposed to be a traveling band still on the road like in the true big band days.
