Historically, wooden and bone frets were used on some lutes and other instruments when frets went over the body and you couldn't use a tied fret.

The bone frets seem to be wider than regular steel frets.
Wouldn't that throw off the intonation?

Plus:I would think that bone frets on a bass would not last if you are a slapper.

So long as the crown of the fret is in the same location, the intonation will be the same no matter how wide the fret.
