Booking bands is not rocket surgery - rant

Please admit you drank a beer or two from that money

While I DID drink a lot of beers back then, none came to me by way of that money. First off there was way too much of it in that bag for a standard 3-night bar take. Second, there was way too many needles and meth going back and forth in the back rooms there, even for the 70's. I was grateful we weren't coming back.

It’s a poopy business. Had a gig once,fully setup on stage & another band walks in claiming it was their gig. After some arguing they pulled out a contract. Venue had a commitee that double booked by mistake. We had to walk and not even an apology. Contracts are rare nowadays.

We just found out that the bar we booked for a Halloween party gig eight months ago just booked another band for the same date on top of us. Apparently, using a calendar is just too hard. We learned about this from the other band, who we’re buds with, not the venue. We pointed it out to the manager and they’ve gone radio silence on both bands. Now neither band is sure if they have the gig.

I’m frankly amazed that places like this even manage to stay in business at all.

I've been playing in the same locale for almost 25 years. I've never heard of a band using a contract for a club or restaurant gig. Weddings and events, yes. Granted, even if the bandleader is under contract, I'm not.

**** happens. I expect a certain number of gigs to evaporate every year, for one reason or another, part of the cost of doing business. Now, booking a second band in case the first one doesn't show up, I'd be really cautious about dealing with that club again.
