If a boost pedal is used (i.e. Creation Audio Labs), does turning up the boost/volume pedal knob in any way put additional strain on your amp? I've heard good things about the CAL.

Boost pedal in relation to amp output

It's a gain increase...after a certain point you can overdrive the amp... boosts can strain your speaker if you are pushing it too hard.
CAL certainly is a nice boost, but there are sooo many others out there. I love boosts, I've owned probably over 20, and tried many, many more.

People say it's always good to match a cab that's a little under the wattage of the head so to punch the cab a bit, but that's not reccomended for someone pushing the head at level 9 - 11 because it's wearing on the head and cab. A boost pedal is similar. Usually boost, compressor, or other sound enhancers have a level/"boost"/volume knob on them. You can crank it when you want (i don't know if it'd be best on the head to keep it at this level all of the time), but when you do, don't have the head cranked as well. My friend did this with a GK Backline 600 (alright low end head), SWR Golliath III jr 2x10 cab, (my) sans amp tech 21 bass driver DI, and a 5string active bass (you shouldn't need to boost an active bass). He head evering thing maxed out (the heads boost, level outputs, volume, and gain; the SWR's horn level; the basses gain and volume; and the level and drive of the pedal). I couldn't help but laugh (only after i had checked that my pedal was ok) that he'd blown out one of his 10" speakers. Hopefully he learned his lesson. Your adding extra volume to your rig. If it's a passive bass, your just giving it the level output of an active.
Yes it's a passive bass and I'd like to get a clean boost pedal to compliment the VT bass pedal. From the amp, would it be recommended to put the boost pedal then the vt to the bass or vice versa?
Right now, I have the amp gain knob at about 9.5 o'clock and the master knob at 3 o'clock. I'm wary as to how Much further I can drive those 4 ohm cabs like that.
Turning that gain knob is pretty much the equivalent of using a boost pedal...but without the satisfaction of buying something 
Umm... I use boost pedals to balance the different outputs of my two active basses.
