Smart move. Top artists are doing this now because:
1. No revenue from cd/lp/cassette sales any more;
2. Money from streaming is a joke:
3. Enormous cash gain makes estate easier to manage;
4. Artists only make real money from touring and we're talking about folks in their 70's and 80's (Dylan, Simon, Neil) who may not want to be out on the road like the old days;
5. Change in tax law will see huge hit on capital gains applicable to big money sales;
6. Folks are tired of the business aspect of the industry and selling off gets them out of it.

Probably more reasons but not hard to understand at all.

Lots of people start a business, build it up over many years, and then sell it. Other than the fact that the product is music content instead of widgets, I don't really see how this is any different.

Because away from the online world where digital theft is as beyond rampant, you still receive monies for ad placements (commercials anywhere they're run, even on YouTube right before the song you're stealing), background music for any number of shows or platforms, movie placements, and more. In the professional end of the business, you still can make money when songs are used in these avenues. Imagine if you placed songs or entire soundtracks of hit movies that play over and over for years like TOP GUN, THE BODYGUARD, or GOODFELLAS. There's one-hit-wonders from the 80's that still get checks from MIAMI VICE re-runs. Also, look at the various artists that now have Broadway plays featuring their music. Ka-Ching $ $ $ .

The sale prices of the catalogs of artists we've seen lately would not take place if the buyers were not completely convinced in the long term viability of using these purchases as assets in the long run. And as pointed out previously, it's one hell of a payday for artists that are Social Security age and older.

The digital piracy that collapsed the traditional record and promotion business is why grandfathers and great-grandfathers are still on the road, as the traditional lines of income have vanished.
