Never been a fan of boss for drive and this confirmed it.
Plus who wants their line out eq'ed and compressed to Boss's idea of what your di should sound like? Not me. Either give me cab sims etc and let me choose, or keep it transparent.

It's not too bad on lower gain settings, but when pushed it's thin and fizzy nature becomes apparent. And if it should send a signal to a PA, make it have an XLR-out!
I'm never sure what the MDP or COSM adds to a pedal. Aren't these pedals just equally expensive digital versions while a better sounding analog equivalent is available?

Absolutely.
Mdp and cosm are cheap digital ways to do something that analog does better. Not a fan. And I agree - how is this a DI without a balanced XLR out?
Their website says it uses MDP but not COSM. I dont see where it says anything about digital. I can't imagine it would be, anyone know for sure? Would your typical soundguy be able to use the TRS output of this thing? Serious question. Wish it had an XLR out.
it has been my experience and opinion that boss does utility (ls2/tuner) and time based effects (my old bf2) better than they do drive/dist etc. i was curious about this pedal, though hardly excited. now i'm no longer curious or excited. it kind of does what i thought it would do.
True, but this signal is supposed to go to a PA. In practice, every device has -and is expected to have- an XLR-out for that purpose.
COSM is another Roland/Boss-technology that they use in many amps and pedals. It's a different thing, but the same "use technology to produce better/different pedals"-approach.
Nowhere does it literally say that it's digital, but the Roland website does say that the other three pedals using MDP have a "MDP-based processor" in them. One of them is a stereo echo (the Tera Echo) which features and sound don't seem possible using analog circuits.
A soundguy could easily put a DI after the line-out, and take an XLR to the board. In reality, I imagine that most soundguys/girls pretty much insist on using a DI right before the input of your amp, instead of using a not so professional-looking TRS-out from a pedal they don't know.
I agree. Their reverb and delay pedals are fine too! Anything else that's digital, and a better analogue equivalent is available.
Guitar players seem to like some of their OD's though (blues driver, ds-1 etc), but for bass... nah.

I have used about 100+ OD/Dist effects in my time and I LOVE the Boss BB-1X! I actually use 2 of them in sequence. The first I use for just a slight tube gain type of fattening effect. The 2nd I run with the gain higher for a nice Hairy/Dirty OD. IMO it's the best out there for those type of applications. I'm not a SansAmp fan and I personally think the Boss CRUSHES it because there is no mid scoop that is inherent to the SA.
YES! I own a VT Bass and of all the Tech21 products the VT is the best but to me the Boss is more natural sounding, has a better range and is easier to dial in sounds. PLUS, the Boss footswitch is much easier to use than the VT bass.
I like the finish Blue Sparkles. Much more brawny than ODB3 Yellow. It does sound good in the clips
You don't need a specific connector (in this case XLR) to output balanced signal. Any 3-conductor connector would do. In this case, the engineers at Roland chose to use TRS 6.3 mm jack, probably for the lack of space inside the pedal. From what I could gather, the balanced output adds some speaker simulation to the tone of the pedal. If you don't like this approach, you can take the unbalanced effect out, put it through your favorite DI-box, and send this to FOH, or you can even send both. IMO the pedal is quite flexible in this respect. It was designed to compete with all these all-in-one pedals for ampless live playing. Time will tell how well it competes against the well known solutions from Tech 21, Aguilar, MXR, EBS... I'm planning to try one soon. It sounds good on the few demo videos out there, and the small size is also a consideration for me. If I could get a sweet tone live, only using this and adding a tuner, I'll be very happy.
I'd love to give this pedal a spin. I, unlike many others, love the ODB3. But, and this is a big but, only if it's going through my B7K. It's grind heaven. It sounds so so sweet. I think the BBx1 would be the new version of the ODB3 so to speak without the fizz and fakeness of it. I was stoked for this pedal when it was announced. I'm still stoked. Would love to try it.
I personally dig the YouTube demo and can't wait to try this pedal. It is exactly what I have been looking for. Since I am not an effect snob I don't really care if it says Boss on it as long as it does what I want.
