Boss GT-10B

thank you for your help...yes I asked about GT-6B...thank you...what drum machine do you use for practice? I am thinking of Dr-880 but I don't think I need so complicate box. I need just a few rhytms so I can practice. What do you suggest?tx

I use the Zoom B2.1u which has 40 preset patterns to practice to, non editable. It's a great little machine and the drum patterns cover most styles, pop, rock, funk, dance, latin, jazz, blues.

One thing that irks me about the gt-6B is that it doesn't have the "pitch hold" capability that the otherwise inferior ME-50B does have. I'm not sure why that decision was made. Yes, the gt-6B has a note hold for synth sounds, but the me-50 can do it for a normal bass note. I find that ability very cool, although I'm thinking most TBers don't care. I am hopeful that this new gt-10b will include that feature.

I do own the gt-6B, by the way. I'm happy with most of it, although yes you do need to tweak it. I could care less about modeling - but I suppose it could come in handy if and when I was recording. I use it for synth sounds, octave up and down, slow gear, chorus, phaser, and touch wah. I still have a problem getting the octave down to sound right - not sure if it's me or the pedal. The synth sounds are ok - not spectacular but again that could be me needing to spend more time tweaking.

Cheers

Yeah, but the pitch hold sounds absolutely HIDEOUS. I've tried to find a use for it, but it just sounds terrible and if you try to combine it with other effects, it really seems to (my ears may not reflect reality, but this is what they tell me) slow the processing down on the other effects making the whole thing sound bad. I thought it would be cool too, but couldn't make it work. Hopefully if it is included on the 10b it will sound better.

Thanks for the tip. I had only played with the ME-50's note hold in a GC (the Plymouth Meeting GC FYI). It didn't sound great, but I figured it could come in handy in certain situations. I liked that you could hold that note then play over it. I also figured I could use it when playing string bass music when the music called for bowing - there's no way I can hold a note for 4 measures at 90 BPM. Maybe an ebow or bass pedals is what I need...

I was able to toy with a GT-10B for a few hours yesterday.
I don't have words to describe it. It is a sick unit in all possible meanings of the term.
It packs so many features, tricks, and ideas that I don't even know where to start describing them. More to follow lately.
If you have questions I can try answering them though.

That's great to hear. Some other TB-ers talking about this put it on my radar a week or 2 back. I would like your opinions on:

-The different effects themselves. How do you like the distortions/phaser/synth/chorus/compression?
-Is it noisy at all?
-I'm sure there's something else I'm leaving out. I'll have to edit once I can think of it. ;)

These will allegedly be available in the US starting tomorrow....looking forward to trying one. :bassist:

What's really great about effects is how many parameters you can adjust.
Distortion is a bit harsh and doen't break very progressively, as usual with digital models. Otherwise there are a bunch to choose from, the SansAmp model is nice.
Synth is pretty basic with only 2 waves to choose from. It's sounds thick and fat though and you can make it leak like an analog device.
An independant hold fonction holds pitch for synth but also for any sound, even clean. Yu can play over the drone created this way.
Compression/limiting is fantastic and ranges from a preset tone to a 4 band independantly adjustable compressor.
Looper is independant from other effects, you can record 38 seconds in mono or 19 in stereo, overdub, apply chosen effects over the loop after recording clean and manipulate it in real time.

No noise at all, pretty good bypass although you still go through the A/D/A chain. NO noticeable artifacts.

Ok, that sounds like a great overall review to me. I guess the harshness of the distortion is one of the tradeoffs with a digital model - no disappointment there, at least.

Glad to hear there were no noticeable artifacts. One of the critcisms I've heard of the Digitech GNX/BNX line was an alleged "phaser" effect that can be heard even with no phaser turned on. I haven't experienced it personally with my BNX3, although it's a legit concern if it pops up and can be heard on a recording.

I don't know how much much use I'll have for the looper, I'd have to work with that one a bit. True bypass would've been nice, but I can live without it.

Thanks for the feedback, Jazz Ad - I'm looking forward to getting to try this one out.

I've just bought a GT-10B and I have to say it's pretty good. I treaded in my GT-6B which i found a bit of a pain in the arse to program, especially in a band situation. Too many menus and too much button pressing for my liking.

The 10B is set out in a much more logical way. It has less knobs but its a whole lot easier to navigate. The EZ Tone is very useful and the screen is big and well laid out. You can dial up your bread and butter sounds in an instant or you can get deeper inside it and program all manner of wacky and wonderful sounds. They've got shut of all that silly auto-slap stuff too which is a plus in my book. In fact all the presets in here are usable.

On the subject of presets. Why do Boss/Roland put bloody preset sounds in these things. Why not do what Korg did on the AX300B and make all the patches writable. I don't need 200 bloody presets.

Anyway, hows it sound?

It sounds wonderful. Not much to complain about here. I even like the OD's. I'm not a metal head so maybe I'm not to judge but they do what I what them to.
I'm not sure if the preamps sound like the amps they are modeling but they are good for shaping the tone and give a nice boost to the sound. I haven't tried recording with it yet mind.

The biggest plus over the GT6 is that FX1 and FX2 now have the same FX list so you have more options to mess with. The A/B FX chain seems like it could be useful but I've yet to figure it out. You can basically switch between two blocks of FXs with the control switch. I'll get back to you on this function.

It also has a basic looper which is great fun for er...playing with yourself.:D Don't think you can save them though.:( I could be wrong I'm still working it out.

Pros
Sounds great, Its easy to use and its a good tool for jamming with due to the looper.

Cons
Its bloody huge! The LEDs are too bright. You can't see whats written behind them in low light. Sunglasses recommended. Limited looper function and er....no drums:bawl::D

Glad to hear yet another positive review. :D

Keep in mind, overdrive and distortion have been creeping into other forms of music....rock, blues, and who knows else? I think the ability to blend the distortion with the clean signal makes it a lot more usable. :)

I'm still looking for one here in the US. The online retailers are still "out of stock." Where'd you find yours?

Enjoy.....I'm almost right behind you... ;)

you should see if rmc audio has some in stock. I got mine yesterday. there in the states and they sell them for 50 dollars cheaper then the other places.

OK,

I too just got the 10B yesterday from RMC. So far manipulating the patches are really easy. To an extent its just like having the single effects right there in front of you. This is a slam dunk great tool boss/roland put together. No noise like the Digitech GNX4 that I have.

My only complaint right now and I might be doing something wrong but I cant seem to get it to work on my laptop (Vista). The drivers at boss/roland are for the GT10 which I would assume are the same drivers and program but so far I have not been able to get it to work. The pedal board has two selections, it will work as a sound card for your computer and that works to play sounds but the Advance mode is used for recording and the GT10 driver I installed is not working for the GT 10B.

Anyone else get USB to work for recording or using the Library Editor to work?

I purchased mine on May 6 too. The local retailer I bought it from had just received it the day before. I spent about an hour playing around with in the store and after I got it home was too busy to play with it again until last night.

In the meantime I saw Victor Wooten on May 8th and he had one on stage. I spoke with him after the show and he said he couldn't understand why they didn't put more looping capability into it considering the looping technology Boss has. Victor had a Boss RC-20XL onstage that he used for his solo.

I've never own a multi-effects unit before so I've got a lot to learn about this one. One thing I'm trying to figure out is if there is anyway to completely bypass all effects. I don't want to use an effect on every tune but I don't see anyway to bypass it short of a switchbox. The manual explains every button, knob, pedal and jack, but I'd like to see a guide of usage scenarios - like how best to set up the user banks for live use.

I haven't tried hooking this up to my laptop yet so I can't comment on that. I have tried most of the presets and I find some very good and some totally useless. It would be nice is Boss had created presets of some of their pedals like the CEB-3, ODB-3 and BF-3. The expression pedal is nice but I wish there was a little more play in it.

I do like this unit though. Plus, I was able to buy it locally and try it out before paying for it. I also paid $20 less for it than what the majority of online retailers are selling it for. I got rid of my pedals a while ago because I was tired of messing with all the cables, adapters and the mess it created on the stage floor. I still have a Pigtronix Disnortion but I'll be unloading that soon. At least with the GT-10B, it's one self contained unit and has all the effect capabilies I want plus I've been wanting a looper for soloing and although this unit's looper capability is limited, it does enough for me to use it for a gig. Too bad you can't save loops.
