Boss GT-1B discussion thread

Just order a GT-1B and it's coming tomorrow! Dead excited.

I had no intention of buying a processor like this but wanting to explore further potential sounds and the combined cost & real estate on pedal board, of octaver/envelope /synth/expression pedals just didn't make sense.

I hope the technology and sounds are not 'outdated'? But there's always the new shiny object coming out. The GT-1B seems to offer (more than) what I want.

Good to have discovered this group. Here's to having some fun....

Hi Guys,

So my GT-1B arrived.

Very first impressions are positive. Bit of 'option overload' initially ! But there's the parameters to create some useful synth patches. How that might work out to use as a background pad and play clean alongside it, will take some working out.....

Couple of first questions (if anyone interested?!)

1. Can the expression pedal ONLY be assigned to the Wah menu ? ( as on page 12 of the parameters guide pdf)
I was hoping to use it for controlling other parameters, when playing live....swelling in some OD or reverb etc

2. I'm getting interference type noise (from the amp cab) when the GT-1B is connected via USB to laptop, with my Scarlett interface also usb'd to same laptop.
I was testing out some patches, whilst jamming /recording to a track. Obviously easier to see/adjust the parameters on laptop screen rather than pedal. Its nice & quiet when NOT connected via usb (1st in pedal chain and XLR out of amp). Btw the output form Scarlett is quiet, its just from the amp. Am I doing something wrong here??

Thanks !! Really appreciate any feedback !

Yeah, the ability to assign the buttons and expression to do whatever is one of the better features on the unit, but it's a little deep in the menus. When you're looking at your chain, all the way over to the right are the button actions and assigns. That's where that magic happens. It'll take a little bit of experimenting to figure out how it works so you can use it on the fly, but it's pretty intuitive once you've gotten it right once or twice.

I watched a couple of this dude's videos and it really shortened my learning curve.

My only suggestion re: the noise is to try to battery power either your computer, boss, or both. I don't know if that'll work, but it's helped my computer noise issues in the past.

Hey thanks man!

Really helpful stuff and great to know about the pedal being versatile across parameters:)

Happy bass!

Yes, if you hear 60-cycle hum/buzz, batteries can help. I have definitely had ground-loop issues in the past. On audio cables you can use isolation transformers (e.g. Ebtech Hum Eliminator), but I don't think that won't work on USB cables.

High-frequency "chatter" though (digital creeping into analog) is a different story, though. There, you need shielding or other means.

Thanks, instant 'mind expansion' ..... Just need to transfer to 'practical live application' ..... Scratches head

Say you're using chorus and reverb for part of a song, but you're using a compressor, EQ, and maybe a preamp for the entire song. You can program one switch to turn both effects or any combo of the items on and off with one touch. Or maybe you want to use the volume pedal as a volume for part of a song, and to change an effect parameter, like delay time, modulation rate, etc... for another. It's possible with Tone Studio.

My live board also includes an external tuner/buffer/mute, compressor, a Q-strip EQ / DI, and distortion. My main use for the GT-1B is for sounds that don't get used continuously, like chorus, phase, flange, octaver, t-wah, volume pedal, and slow gear. The Boss effects are good enough for live use to get the job done and leave many pounds of individual pedals at home. I have a series of presets that are simply one effect that I can call up on demand and operate it as a stand alone pedal, ex:// a phaser or chorus, assigning knobs and switches to act like the pedal in that preset. I also have an "all off, pass-thru" preset in the first slot. The "all off" preset can be handy to copy at different areas so you can pop back and forth between a complicated preset or two and a straight & clean bass signal.

I have several nice amps, including a Mesa TT-800 and Little Mark III, so I typically only use the Boss preamps when I want a distinctively different sound during a show, or while practicing with headphones. I have a few crazy presets, like Slow Gear "bowed" swells, a fake stand-up acoustic bass sound that's surprisingly good, and even an organ sound I can use to do baseball and hockey sound bites in sports bar. The fake stand-up gets a lot of compliments when used on rockabilly, oldies, or mellow country stuff.

The unit is also a nice battery powered headphone amp, complete with aux in. I use it all the time when my wife is asleep.

The hard part when I first got it was not going down a rabbit hole and staying up all night playing with the device and Tone Studio.

hey many thanks!

That's really exciting to hear and I'm inspired to investigate building some unique patches.....Just what I wanted.
Similar to yourself, I have a few pedals like I like, but wanted those extra sounds, without having to add a synth, octaver, flanger or envelop, expression pedal, etc.

I spent many happy rabbit hole hours in lockdowns, getting handy with Ableton. I dabble with this live to produce interesting textural synth type backings, cued with footpedals. Huge possibilities, but laptop, interface and cabling extra baggage/stress. Surprised there's not much out there though, for using Ableton live in a (guitar type) band context. The session clips are brilliantly designed for live performance. Tons of info for electronic/DJ type stuff.

Happy days

Dude i miss my gt1b. Ive learned how to use it properly and trust me theres nothing you cannot do on that device (except ir loading and polyphonic synths). I knew it like the palm of my hand and i sold it...now im team Helix but kinda miss my beloved gt1b...the fact is that helix got another learning curve and im not using it properly as i want....maybe in the future i would buy another gt1b unit to build a "B rig"...now im pretty busy building my future cabs hahaha.

Confused...

can anyone please point me to a tutorial on how to actually build/organise your own patch library?

Editing a patch is clear, but the saving options are not. I understood that the presets cannot be 'wiped'. So I assumed that when creating your own, they will be saved elsewhere? So you would build your own list of personal named patches, to be able to scroll/select?
This vid shows a patch 'selecting the destination to save' . But when the knob is turned it just scrolls through the sequence of presets? If you save it (yes you can rename), will the patch overwrite the preset?

So if a new patch is created, is it not being saved to 'librarian' in the tone central software? how do you give it a different label/number?

Thanks?

Any patch that starts with a p cant be overwritten. Go past all of those until you get to the set with 'u' as the suffix and you can overwrite those. Press the menu and edit buttons together and jump through a few hoops after that (one of those hoops names the patch) to save.

Thanks!

Can you revert/clear a U patch to previous preset? ie I have inadvertently renamed a U patch to blank name.... Forget what it was

I haven't noticed and P patches yet....?

Also, do you know what the 'librarian' list is for in tone central?
