Boss GT-1B discussion thread

I emailed Boss yesterday and they were unbelievably quick, I had a response by this morning.

I mainly asked if all those tasty guitar patches could be loaded into the GT-1B. Their answer... no. The engineering differences between the two would make it impossible, and the pre amps aren't all the same, then went on and on about the gt1000 and other higher end models that could.

I sent the reply to my buddy, I generally trust his wisdom. He said I could risk bricking my GT-1B if I could even get as far as loading those guitar patches on.

I tend to disagree. I think either it'll work or it won't, and worst case scenario will be me having to do a factory reset on it. I'm the type to try it and see for myself when it comes to calculated risks.

The real danger being I'm home from work sick today with nothing better to do than fiddle. I could make a run to GC and be back home with a new GT-1 in an hour or less, take no risks and load guitar patches all day, or I could just stay here get on bosstone central, and see what happens when I try loading them on my GT-1B...

I'm kind of looking for real practical experience here, do you or anyone else think there's a significant chance I'll do irreparable damage to the bass version by loading guitar patches on it ?

Right now I think not, but I'm deff often to opinions....

On another option, I could go get the GT-1 mess with it and still have plenty of time to return it if I need to....

mmm..... From personal experience, I tend to stick to the tried and tested principle... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"....

But good luck!

I went for broke, but nothing broke ..

Tried loading system software for gt1

Said no GT-1 was recognized

Changed the name of the file to gt1

Got a checksum error

At this point I'm convinced the gt1 and GT-1B are identical but for the ROM it's manufactured with. That's the part that some one else with more knowledge than me could probably get past.

I ordered and received the GT1. Currently trying it out.

I may very well keep it but welcome anyone's suggestion for a higher end model if you think it would make much of a difference. I have little experience when it comes to processors and such, but if the gains are worth it I could easily return this for an upgrade.

Thanks,

Joe

Some of the other brands are designed as multi-instrument pedals.

Or, sticking with Boss, check out the GT1000 either Floor or Core.

I went from the gt1b to the GT1000CORE and now I'm on the gx100 and will be keeping this unit. all great units but this one was just right for ease of use.

Thank You,

I'll deff check it out. it occured to me the last day or two, the GT1/GT1B everyone says it has heaps of potential. It does.
Ease of use isn't the number one strength on it. I have an old Kustom 2 switch latching pedal i can and have used as CTL 2 and CTL3, but in general i haven't gotten far enough to put them to good use.

We have the technology today, and it's getting more common/less expensive, but the design and ease of access isn't always the best..

The touch screen makes all the difference

More than enough bass options. It also has direct mix for EVERYTHING.
You are piquing my curiosity now. I still have plenty of time to return my GT1.... :)

The GT1B I've had for awhile does seem to work well for both guitar and bass on most all settings, The GT1 i bought with the intention of comparing it to the GT1B, to me the differences in effects/amps etc aren't mind blowing enough to convince me. maybe it's because I've owned and adjusted the GT1B for a year, but if i I AM pretty happy with what it can do for both bass and guitar, in other words the GT1 doesn't seem different, or better enough to justify keeping it,,, they are both good units but not different enough, and out of both I would currently be happy using my GT1B for both bass and guitar...especially if I had to choose between the two. I'm almost positive I'll return the GT1 this week.

If you can afford it just get the GX100. it's the latest tech and does more. The GT1000 is amazing but was over kill for my uses

GT1 I would not expect to blow away the GT1B, but to just have a few more guitar specific amps and models built in. A GT1000 is what I will probably end up with eventually, because I do play guitar and it is very well regarded and I need a new guitar modeler, my Vox Tonelab is getting long in the tooth. So I would use all that functionality and some people seem to think the GT1000 is great with bass too...though it has much less in terms of bass specific modeling. It has way more flexibility. As suggested, the GX100 is another less expensive option also that would be great for covering both guitar and bass.

But I'm not in a rush, and at the moment I'm finding the GT1B quite enough for me.

The touch screen makes all the difference

If they can't incorporate a touch screen in all multi-effects units and modeling amps going forward, it would be cool to have a Bluetooth app for both major mobile OS. To me, Tone Studio makes the GT-1B (and Katana!) far more powerful and easier to use, as a full on menu-driven touch screen also could.

Since we've already got a touch screen in our pocket as a phone, on our mic stand as a tablet, or both, why not?

Right now I like the GT1B more on guitar than the GT1. Probably depends somewhat on personal taste. Being I ended up with more Fender Rumble than I need, I don't plan on anything but the rumble for guitar. I'm really super happy playing through this bass amp and it leaves me wanting nothing.

I agree, it wouldn't take that much for the phone software and the katana and others do it. We all need a pretty big space tp properly work with all of these options...

In the case of the GT1B I am finding that while it might be a little easier to have an iPhone app or whatever, I have been forcing myself to just use the buttons on the top of the unit to make changes and its not that hard. This unit is simple anyway by design...it is completely overkill to have a touch pad on it or to need an iPhone to edit it. That would be far more interesting with the GT1000...but I think there is an app right? Anyway, with the GT1B...once you get used to it...its really not that hard to tweak it right on the box...took hardly any time to learn how to do these kinds of things, so if I'm playing with people and need to tweak it quickly I can. At home I just use the BOSS software on my Mac...which is a little easier to use...but half the time I don't even bother to fire up the software if I just need to tweak a little something I can do it right from the top of the GT1B even faster most of the time.

I have that, the gx takes the Bluetooth dongle and I use the app on my phone
