Classic.
Start by making it really subtle, and make it less and less subtle. I'm guessing you'll get some evil stares.
He's a good guy, and a bass player; he picked up guitar to challenge himself in different ways, and has really done a great job for starting later than most. But he can't play both at the same time (yeah, I know, talk to Michael Manring ) so I sit in on bass when appropriate for the songs.
That said, we enjoy gentle humor at times during a gig. If I kicked on the distortion or synth and played a short riff right before a really soft song, he'd probably pretend to fall off his stool or something. The leader of the band he normally plays bass in (more of a classic pop style) likes to tease by punching in the overdrive and playing a couple of measures of AC/DC or some other wildly inappropriate genre in between songs. That usually results in the lead singer rolling her eyes and making sarcastic remarks over the mic. All part of the show...
Those are really about the only times any of us ever uses distortion, frankly.
We're focused on hearing the vocals and supporting the melody in almost all the songs we play; we use bass as a foundation or part of the rhythm section to make the band sound better, and aren't really interested in being the lead. Still fun, but less stress.

My B2.1u has 40 preset beats, so, if we could keep it simple enough, we wouldn't even need to pay a drummer!
That would get everyone's attention, as we don't have a drummer.
Do you use a drum machine in your band?
No, most of the repertoire is acoustic guitar w/vocals, and usually the venue is a small coffee shop or supper club with barely enough room for the two of them, let alone when I sit in. Drums haven't been needed yet, which makes the setup fairly quick. I actually have more equipment than the other two people combined.
