Boss overdrive or distortion pedal(guitar)

My first band broke up:(, and my guitarist is moving away in a week. He's going to give away one of his pedals to me, which one should i take. I have a boss flanger, weeping demon, and a black russian muff. I'm not much of an overdrive person but i was liking it a bit better than the distortion. The ds 1 only seemed to boost my russian. Any suggestions?

OK, kinda hard to understand exactly which pedals you mean there. Boss makes lots of different overdrives and distortions. I guess the DS-1 is the distortion? You can have somebody mod the DS-1 for bass, and it'll be a pretty cool pedal. The same is probably true of whatever overdrive you're talking about. If you meant the ODB-3, it's really more of a distortion than an overdrive, no matter what it says on the box. Just pick the one that sounds "least crappy", and enjoy it as is, or have somebody mod it for bass.

But the question is which pedals are being offered up to choose from? Like bongomania stated, boss has a ton of pedals for both distortion and overdrive, and trying them out is definitely the best way to go.

Boss has soundclips (guitar) of many of their pedals. Not really applicable for bass, unless they have the option to chain them on their virtual pedalboard to see how they sound... but it wouldn't give you an idea of how the pedals would work with your non-boss pedals, or with your bass or amp.

Just ask to try each one (and we're back at bongomania's reply).
