Boss Pedals

I'm as much of a pedal bore as anyone... But there's still a DS-1 (albeit with two circuit bends) on my board, and an SD-1 lying around my flat. BOSS make good solid stuff, and if you can use a soldering iron, potentially AMAZING stuff (that SD-1 can be turned into your favourite boutique Tubescreamer clone fairly easily).

If you hate the bypass, re-box them with a 3PDT switch. Or use a looper. But most people I've met outside of bass forums don't mind the bypass.

Generally, I like Boss' stuff and I never feel like they're gonna break on me. A few of their pedals don't appeal to me (such as the acoustic guitar simulator) and the AW-3 envelope filter I had once didn't quite do it for me, but everything else I've tried or owned has been hunky dory. Call me crazy, but I actually like how my totally stock, garden-variety unmodded DS-1 sounds (as with everything else in a given rig's signal chain, it's all about how a pedal interacts with the other pieces involved.)

I've never noticed any tone suckage after doing some informal, unblind A-B testing... I figure if my mind can't play any tricks on me after that and I don't notice any difference, I shouldn't worry about it (and I don't.)

I love the tremolo pedal the tr2 I think. I sold mine cuz I was broke and thought I was overusing it. I have a bf2 Flanger and love it. it isn't too great on low notes but i use it mostly up high so no problem. I also have a ps2 pitch shift delay and that thing is fun.

I very much dislike the bass overdrive. I have heard people use it well though. Like Brian Gibson in Lightning Bolt, and I know for a fact King Buzzo of the Melvins uses two(crunch,boost) on (gasp) GUITAR. I gave mine away to some guy.

I have owned a lot of Boss products over the years. I still have (and love) a CE-2 chorus, BF-2 Flanger, LS-2 Line Selector, OC-2 Octave, and GT-3 Multi-FX. I've had a CE-3, Heavy Metal Pedal, GE-7B Bass EQ, Hyper Fuzz, PH-3 Phaser, SYB-3 Synthesizer, 0DB-3 Bass Overdrive, plus ME-50B and GT-6B Multi-FX.

They're still some of the best-built, most reliable effects in the business and the ones I've kept continue to inspire me (especially the BF-2).

IMO the GT series Multi-FX processors are one of the best values out there--you get pretty much all their effects, in any order, with MIDI and pedal control of literally any parameter.

boss is hit or miss. a couple of their pedals are real trash (the green phase shifter, the synth pedals) some just arent great but some think theyre okay (choruses, delays) and a couple of them, some people think theyre great (oc-2, some of the distortions/overdrives, phrase loopers).

i used to think they were all great. then i ventured out and hunted down some serious boutique pedals, and nowadays i'd rarely consider buying a boss pedal.

this is all just my oppinion..some people swear by boss.
