Bottom and growl...

i've been having more growl with my new okoume L2000 and the stock xl170s than my vintage mahogany one ever had, but those strings are always in a state of flux, either really ringy and bright, settled in like late 60s rock, or deadish and almost like flats
(i donated the trbx504 i won on instgram to the altadena fire victims)

Very surprised to see Prosteels recommended, I would advise to stay away from those if you want growly mids as Prosteels are very scooped ime/imo

Fat Beams for sure, and GHS round core Boomers.

DR Fat Beams. Great low mids, bottom, long lasting . THERE is a difference between Hi Beams & Fat Beams. Hi Beams are little more tame & not as growly as Fat Beams.

Depends on gauge. For me, DR Sunbeams 45-105

Fat beams are a good recommendation. Id throw in Dean Markley Blue Steels and LaBella RX Stainless. They both sound nice and thick and I've had a great time playing both. I really like the way Dunlop signature series stainless steel sounds too. Everything I have tried those on really sounds good with these. I get nice growly mids with these.

I'd have to agree. I haven't used a lot of different rounds - mainly because I don't much care for them. But, of the ones I have used? Hex core GHS Bass Boomers fit this criteria the best. I put them on my '13 Gibson Thunderbird, after the factory strings died - as in won't stay in tune, won't intonate at all any more, died - and, the Boomers were the closest I could come to them. Other than having more sustain, they were very much like some of the darker, low range focused flats that I use. My '82 headless, aluminum-necked Kramer "The Duke" came to me with short scale Bass Boomers on it. played them until they died, too. But, my nerve damaged, frostbitten fingers just can't deal with rounds any more, so I - reluctantly, in some cases - gradually converted all of my basses to flats and tapes. Now, none of my 30 basses wear rounds - of any brand. As for the T-Bird? Dogal R44 "Traditional" Flats. Actually not quite as much low end as the Boomers, but... close. And, my fingers are much happier... The Kramer? With the aluminum neck; the 31" scale; and the unique Schaller "Twin J" pickup? Took some searching, but DR SFL Legends come very close to the Boomers it wore. Actually, my ears don't hear much difference at all; but my fingers certainly do feel the difference...
