GB, Super, LBWdog, others, what's the general assessment of how sturdy the 1503 is? I realize none of us have had it that long but those of you who have gigged with it must have some general impressions on how well its holding up to set up/tear down, etc.?

I've only carried mine from upstairs to downstairs and it hasn't budged since. What I can say is that I definitely plan on putting some corner protectors on it as I can see the corners getting mashed up pretty bad once it starts moving in and out of cars and clubs.

I'm so happy for you I baked you a cake!

Enjoy!!!

It's low calorie...

Only time will tell but for $5 a nice set of corners from BLT can't hurt. I ordered mine with my Kappalite.

I think they'll age well...

I guess we'll see. It sounds like most of the concerns regarding how durable it is are related to the corners and the quality of the carpeting. However, what about the general construction. Any concerns with things coming loose, etc?

As promised I cranked it back up at lunch. Oh alright, I admit I'm really starting to dig this. Its so beefy and thumpy. (Mmmm didn't The Who have a tune called Beefy and thumpy?) I find myself not using the SansAmp much. Not sure why but the bass seems to have enough fuzz without it and is so much more present.

I have to say that I love this cabinet. I just got mine a couple of days ago. It has been a joy to play, especially with my Line6 modeling stuff. Even without the modeling, this thing forces me to play better. I set it up with the GBE750 playing through both the NeoX212T (also a very nice cabinet) and the LS1503 and it sounds great. The 1503 being only 8ohm vs. the 212T being 4, it's only getting 1/3 of the power, but adds a nice sheen and a bit more low end to the package. Even alone with the GBE750 (and now the NeoPak that I just received today) it sounds really, really good. I was really contemplating getting another one to get down to 4ohms, but the more I play with this cabinet, the less that I think that I need to.

Speaking of that, it doesn't look like anyone has picked up the 1523, right?

Yes.. indeed I am going to get one.. as soon as my deal with getting my Thunderfunk complete. The we'll see how I am set with funds.. but it is looking like I will be getting one with in the next month if all works out right..

It's definitely too early in the game to tell, but I'd say my assessment so far is that it is not as sturdy as some of my old standbys, but probably sturdy enough, especially if you get a cover for it.

As I recall, the baltic birch I saw when opeing my cab was 9-ply void free baltic birch, which is the densest, strongest plywood available - should be up to anything you would subject a cab to in the thickness used, which is a great choice for some weight savings. You normally don't see this on cheaper cabs. The construction, gluing and bracing all appear to be top-notch. The cab sure passes the knuckle test for rigidity of panels.

I also think the rat fur is just as tough as I've seen on other cabs, but since its wrapped and glued on thinner panels, you may be thinking it's thinner since you are seeing the thinner lips at the front of the cab. I see absolutely no bubbling or slack in the way it was glued and wrapped.

I actually have corner protectors left over from another project here but haven't found a need to install them on my LS1503, since it's a light piece of gear it doesn't tend to get shoved around by brute force to get it in place for transport.

Thought I'd mention that the crossover appears to use beefier components than the photos I've seen of Dr Bass and Accugroove crossovers too, and is TRUE three-way with a higher components count for padding and equalizing the high-frequency components.

Another thing I like about the LS series is that the midrange driver used is NOT a closed back version. A larger sealed chamber makes its response less peaky and internally reflective, and a sealed midrange sub-enclosure for a smaller midrnage provider seems to offer better transient response than is found in two-way designs where the midrange has to be supplied by a large[er] woofer.

Hey sevenorchids,

I've got my stuff set up at home so that I can hear my V-Bass through a PA main and subwoofer optimized just as the full PA is at gigs, my "big rig" Ampeg 1832 Extreme, and my LS1503. Switching back and forth between them certainly shows what's going on. I certainly have never heard a live performance cab this small that does such a great job at revealing any changes in parameters during patch design for modeling, or just playing. I've come to trust it entirely after doing so much A/B auditioning.

Umm - I know this a BASS forum - but I was wondering. Would this same approach work well for a guitarist working with a Line 6 POD XT Live?

The guitarist from my son's band is currently using a borrowed Marshall JCM 2000 Super Lead head into a half stack cab, but his sounds are really coming from his POD and he seems to be mainly using the head as a straight power amp. He hasn't been happy with ANY combination he's used to date with the POD XT live - but - he seems to like the flexibility of the POD XT live for his basic tone & effects options.

So I am wondering if he wouldn't be better off simply taking the approach of using clean power from basic power amp into a full range cab like we are talking about here? Would this same cab work well for that approach? Or are there others to look at assuming this idea makes sense?

I'd really appreciate GB's perspective on this especially given your live sound engineering experience.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hey edgerunner,

If I was a guitarist using modeling I'd be going for a more accurate amp/cab combination, probably more like a good stage wedge with a pro power amp or high-quality tube power amp driving it. You really don't need the low frequency extension the LS1503 provides, but LS1202 looks like it would be great for this. That conical waveguide would be right sharp too!

Since guitarists are often using high gain distortion with all the added emphasis on high frequency overtones, one would have a personal monitor much like what's in the PA, response-wise, so any patches used would translate well for live sound reinforcement.

Thanks greenboy. I'll have to discuss this with his dad and him. I think the person who loaned him the Marshall will be taking it back soon, and he is starting to look around to see where he wants to go amp wise.

If he wants a larger spread of the guitar sound on stage, or for situations where the PA is mainly just reinforcing the vocals and he needs to fill the room - would this type of setup with 2 of these speakers work well?

Thanks for your thoughts, and sorry for dragging the thread away from BASS. :-)

Sure, though that'll be capable of being louder than snot ; }

Biggest challenge a modeling guitarist faces when using accurate cabs and distortion is to keep high frequencies under control by using cab modeling and subtractive EQ when the distortion is turned on.
