Bowing trouble.

I just had my first double bass lesson yesterday. I'm not sure what the problem is but I can barely hold the french bow in my hand. I barely made it through the lesson yesterday. It's almost like the bow falls right out of my hand unless I use my full hand strength to hold it, which leaves me in agonizing pain after about 10 seconds. I practiced holding the bow for about an hour last night and have tried for about an hour today. I simply cannot hold the bow. Is that something that will go away with practice or should I give the german bow a try?

It will definitely improve with practice. If the bow is correctly placed in the hand, everything should stay with a relaxed hold.

That said, I do believe that a German bow grip tends to be more natural for a beginner. And I've always been a French bow guy.
