I remember hearing some time ago that bright basses sound better with bright strings and darker sounding basses sound better with warmer sounding strings. In your experience, does the adage hold true?

Bright basses sound better with bright strings and vice versa?

It's really totally subjective.
I tend to put brighter sounding strings on my darker sounding basses and vise-versa so they meet up somewhere in the middle. It's not what sounds "best"; It's just what sounds best to me.

It'a all subjective.
If a bass is too bright, you can tame it with the strings. If too dark, a string change could brighten it up. There is now law/rule for bass tone.

It may depend on the amount of tone control you have on your bass. If you have a bright bass with with limited tone control then I think darker strings would be better. Sure, you can use the PA or your amp but it's easier to not have to battle the highs you don't need just by using darker strings.
