Stiffness is not necessarily a bad thing. I do like the firmness of the hex core. And I do use the 40-100 set.

Brightest smoothest rounds?

These are the smoothest rounds I have ever used, unfortunately they are also probably the darkest sounding, they literally sounded like flats after a couple of weeks when I tried them
All my road years I was a dedicated Roto guy and have the callouses to show for it. As an old guy playing a church gig on Sundays I tried flats.... Ahhhh... I never knew what comfort I was missing.
My vote would be the new Fodera x DR collaboration. Since the Fodera-made strings are long gone, I have been trying these on my basses and they sound and feel very close to the OG Foderas IMO. They feel very smooth to me, the steels are quite bright, and so far (several weeks in) they have incredible longevity.
I'm surprised nobody has recommended the D'Addario NYXLs. They are my favorite rounds in terms of sound and feel! The difference between them and the regular XLs is real and very much worth the upgrade.
They don't sound like flats to me, but they are strong in mids but not highs.
The regular XLs are good strings, but they die within three months for me. They would probably die even sooner if I were regularly gigging. The NYXLs last twice as long for me and they feel and sound nicer than the regular XLs.
I would try a set and see if you like them. It can't hurt.
I've never cared for how they sound.
Maybe, although I have about twenty sets of rounds (mostly Rotosound SM66N I've been using since the 1990s) and half a dozen of flats (mostly TI I've been using since the 00s) in stock so I'm in no rush!
