broken tweeter? ... maybe?

ok so I officially declare myself the only person on this website stupid enough to buy a 115 cab, and use it for half a year, before realizing the tweeter makes absolutely no sound...

so getting to the point... my GK 115SBX APPEARS to have a tweeter that doesnt tweet. I have checked the tweeter settings on the back, and have tried tweaking with knob. nothing... no sound...

i know absolutely nothing about how to open up a cab, but I dont have the time money or patience to get it repaired somewhere.

its not that tragic of an issue to me (obviously... since i didnt even notice till now) But if there is a way for me to fix this and get it to work, I would really appreciate somebody explaining this to me.

I will help you. If you want to open her up then the easiest way to check any suspect speaker is pop a 9V (PP3 in the UK) battery accross the terminals.

Only do this for a fraction of a second but you should hear a click or pop (Depending on the size of the speaker). This shouldnt damage the speaker.

If you hear the pop then the speaker is fine and its something else if not then i would phone GK who, im sure will be happy to sell you a new tweeter. Alternativley go to an electronics store and buy an off the shelf replacement.

Obviously the GK option will be the most expensive but genuine. The electronics store option will work just as well (as long as you buy like for like) and cost you less.

which part of this tweeter is made of selenium please?. selenium is a element similar to silicon that used to be used in the production
of solid state diodes. It is illegal today as the only way to get it to work as a diode is to mix it with large quantities of gallium and arsenic, It has no other purpose other than a use in photo electric cells and thus photocopy machines are the only place you will find this element today. and they would be anything but ROHS compliant ones.
I kind of thought that hf drivers reached a peak in design when people used to be able to afford to have them fitted with something called a properly designed phase plug.

as in this rather old fashioned and way too expensive idea for todays accountancy/marketing lead engineering.
Chances are its also far too heavy as well, unless of corse you are an erudite bloke called James Lansing then you would of kinda thought you had this one licked by now. They are available with beautifully made pepper-pot horns second hand on ebay.

I am going to start a company called "Solid Gold Jewelry" we will of course, as one would expect be manufacturing hang gliders for squirrel's in China. Does anybody have any idea where I can buy some selenium?, all i keep coming up with in google is this stupid cheap badly designed speaker manufacturer.

OK update, i DID locate wire and a 1.5volt battery. (rest in peace, old telephone)

upon testing my tweeter i discovered it DID make noise with the battery connected.

so the question remains... why the hell won't it make noise when I try to play through it??

Maybe this is why the SBX II models are discontinued <_<

Are you connecting to it via a speakon connector? Speakon are generally 4 pole and it is likely that it is connected 1+ & 1- Bass driver 2+ & 2- Tweeter.

Usually there is a rear switch that makes the cab Bi-Amp or not. You could try bridging between the 4 poles but i wouldnt put money on the tweeter lasting long if you play at high volumes.
