Folks rave about the Resonant Filter Equalizer's tone shaping abilities. I don't have any hands on experience with it myself, but they are in stock.

IR boxes are fun, and the CabZone X is cool. You can spend a lot of time trying out different IRs, though. It can be one heck of a rabbit hole.

The tubed Sushi Box FX Particle Accelerator is based on the Alembic F-2B preamp. Might also be worth a look.

Yeah from what I can ascertain, the Demeter Tube circuitry might sponge-ify some of the fizz, which will be nice.

That Sushi Box pedal is rad. We truly are living in the golden age of pedals.

Definitely been going down the IR wormhole – at first it's a whole other language. My band was hitting the rehearsal spot once a week/every other week for mask jams until the big COVID spike, but figure there will be some sort of hybrid writing sessions going on for the foreseeable future. Might as well make it sound good while I'm doing it (oh no, oh, oh no, I'm making a home studio, aren't I...).

Did a little bit of monkeying around with some pedals tonight while playing along to some Déjà Vu by CSNY.

P/flats>Solarian>Silver Deuxe/Sushi Box London Underground>Cali Compact Deluxe. Some random thoughts after messing around for an hour:
  1. Solarian and Silver Deluxe both sound SO MUCH better at 18V! I’m usually pretty, pretty lazy, and when I’m just sitting down to noodle for an hour I don’t often bother to pull out my power supply to plug things in at higher voltage. As a result I’ve been kind of turned off on these two in particular because I usually end up using them at 9V. But I did 18V tonight and wow what a difference. Especially with the Solarian. I’d go so far as to say I actually don’t like it at 9V, but it’s like a completely different pedal at higher voltage. Way smoother, less farty and honky. 100% better sounding.
  2. I was trying to see if I could get away with keeping one or the other of the Silver Deluxe and the London Underground. They both definitely cover the same ground, and I could EQ them each to hit similar marks, but they sound different enough from each other that I couldn’t pick a clear winner.
    • Both pedals are Fender tone stack, but LU is based on Orange topology in terms of gain staging.
    • Generally speaking, SD is smoother and warmer with a fuller low end. LU is clearer overall with a grindier midrange. By comparison the SD kinda sounds like it has a warm fuzzy blanket over it, but not in an unpleasant way.
    • SD seems to have a wider boost/cut range on the EQ controls.
    • SD has the Bright switch, and LU has separate Gain and Volume.
    • LU of course is a true high voltage tube signal path, but as a result requires a more robust power supply.
    • Both pedals definitely have their place. I didn’t play with them together much, but if I were going to stack them again I’d put the LU before the SD next time.
  • Cali Compact Deluxe is usually on my guitar board but I patched it in for tonight and it sounded great. Different than my usual Monocomp on bass. Very “Ampy”, with a nice subtle driven character to it.

The results would be similar, IME.

I am using Broughton RFE at the end of my signal chain for the following reasons:
  • I like that it's adjustable
  • I like the resonance function
  • I prefer to keep my signal chain analog

Which is exactly why I live in Gallatin. Just far enough away from Davidson county to not have the stupid level of county tax but close enough to bounce in and out for gigs. Took my entire board for a gig last night and as much of a pain as it is to haul it I absolutely loved having it all there. We had to cover 4 hours since the other 2 bands were no shows and I got to jam out all bass solo for nearly 30 mins. Too much fun.

I agree that Solarian doesn't sound good at 9v. I almost sold mine before trying higher voltages! 15v is a good sound too- slightly more breakup than 18, but still clear.
