Broughton Audio Super Thread

Down to just two Broughs on the board, but still more on topic than the majority of my posts. Happy 4th jams:

After years of trying to find the willing recipient, I finally traded the Subway 210 for another 115. And dear god... amp gas has subsided. The difference is very real and noticeable. I even plugged my bass directly into the amp and wouldn't have been mad if I had to use it. I mean, it ain't the same as my meticulously over-crafted, gain staged, multi eq'd monstrosity, but I wouldn't cry if the stack was all I had to work with.

Thr Oranges are about to become museum pieces.

What are your tone goals? I like grindy, heavy Rat tones that fit with various metal styles. I've had plenty of Rats the past few years, and here is an incredibly short breakdown:

I’m using it in more a of psych-rock style, not entirely different from how you’d use a fuzz. I’ve found it easier to get to “crushing sustain” without losing too much definition of the actual note that I’m playing. For a long time I was using a Pork & Pickle in this slot.

I’ve liked the Locust Star in this role because there’s a lot of runway where the top end is cutting and metallic, and doesn’t really get fizzy to the point of taking over a sound. I can also have it set such that it’s very heavily distorted but offers a lot of articulation and then push it over the top with a boost into that “wall of sustain”

The 215 is the way if you like volume and force. I’ve cycled through a lot of alternative setups but nothing really matches it. More mid and less subby than most people would assume.

Just for reference I guess. It’s getting a healthy dose of treble from upstream, so the high rolloff here is keeping things in check. LPF end of chain, usually set around 5-7k so the signal stays bright, but not piercing.

Similar to my settings! I've got gain and range a bit lower, around 10:30 and 1:30. They're almost mirror images. And slightly less bass.

As per your reference to using it as a "fuzz", I haven't tried that much, but I do have a VT set for it. The internals are at noon, then I tweaked the other controls. I think they all stayed noonish besides volume. But it worked well for the tone, and kept more treble and articulation than most Muffs, if not being quite so bass-heavy. But I only spent a few minutes trying that. The old EA Iron Pig may have been better as a fuzz, but I no longer have that one and it's been a while. The attack knob woukd likely have done wonders for "fuzz".

If I were to use a Rat as a fuzz, I feel the Tremond may best. Of course, I don't want piercing high gain fuzz, so the lower gain of the Tremond would be my preference. I have no doubt the VT or LS would also do quite well when adjusted properly.

I completely missed an anniversary - joined Talkbass on 6/26/06. 20 years of wasting time between gigs! This Broughton thread has been the highlight, no doubt about that. Here’s to 20 more.

Here’s a flashback photo from right around the time I joined. Beardless young pup. From the Balcony Bar on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans. Was a post-Jazzfest night show, so last weekend of April or first weekend of May.

Condolences to our Northern Bros regarding the World Cup. 😢

Thanks, but condolences are unnecessary. The team did great and achieved many first in Canadian soccer. I'm hope their performance will inspire the youth and help bolster our national soccer programs.

Besides, there's always a chance our Prime Minister calls the president of FIFA and gets the Canadian team put back in the running. 😉

Well, I don’t think Morocco plays much ice hockey, but if they do, Canada will completely kick their a$$e$. 😂
