Broughton HPF + LPF - wow!

Would you say using the drive on your TH made the HPF expendable?
The Broughton pedals are more versatile for sure, especially the dual controls for the hpf/lpf. The Drive function on the TH kicks in three things all at once. At very low levels it adds some tubey harmonics, then it adds the hpf and the lpf simultaneously. As you turn it up it continues to cut more of the highs (i.e. dialing down the cutoff for the lpf). It is kind of a weird design but it works. Having two separate controls would be great but that said I do like the TH.

I joined a second band so have simplified my rig to EUB, preamp, tuner, amp and leave the pedal board and everything else at home. Had to go to a leaner set up since it seemed I was constantly packing up and going to the point that when I practice at home I usually use a Fender and a Vox headphone amp. But learning to use the Drive has given me a real appreciation for these filters.

I recently purchased the HPF to go with my D800 head and my new cabinet. Plugging straight into the head with my bass the woofer would fart out like crazy.... add my compressor and the HPF around 40hz and farting is gone!!!! excellent and useful pedal to get rid of those pesky lows that you don't need!!!

Did you get the Broughton? I've been reading a lot about them and really want to pick one up but can't seem to find out where and how to go about it.

I thinking of getting a high pass filter very soon. My question is......

I use a Bergantino Speakers that have a frequency cut off of around 45hZ. Will a high pass filter be a benefit if the speaker filters frequency's at this point? Or is it overkill. Can this filter still tighten up my tone?

The benefit of the HPF, as I interpret it, is that speakers will waste energy attempting to reproduce those rolled-off frequencies anyway, and filtering them out before they hit the speaker helps them operate more efficiently. My interpretation may be incorrect, so I'll defer to someone with more knowledge of speaker mechanics on this point. The cab (or your amp) may also have some pre-speaker filtering built in.

That being said, if you ever run a DI signal to front-of-house, I'd say it's definitely worth it even if you don't notice a difference through your cab. You may also find that you like the cutoff frequency set a little bit higher than the point where your cab rolls them off.

That's actually correct. Personally, I don't see the point in using them for that purpose, but I'm not looking to eke out every last drop of power in my amps, either.

That's what I use my HPF for...so the 20-30 year old house sound techs at the Villages don't give me the Snoop Dogg bass mix because it's their only frame of reference :D

I find the biggest benefit of the HPF is in the FoH mix. Far too often the house PA has a few subwoofers that the soundman is usually too willing to feed every note you play into them, creating tons of mud. I'd prefer to stay out of the mud.
 
A quick post - just got my Broughton LOW + HIGH PASS FILTER. Wow, I mean, wow... It's the little things.

A simple pedal, just cuts off the low end high end to suit you. A Band Pass filter, actually. But in less than a minute I was able to dial in a sound I've been after for years. Just blocks out lows and highs, essentially cleaning up the low end and high end, making the bass sound more like it was recorded and mastered. This pedal delivers. Love it. Thank you Josh!
Question, I just picked up a Broughton HPF/LPF pedal off of Craigslist, wondering if I should hook it in using effects loop on my amp, or just run it straight in to the input from the bass, or does it even matter? Happy New 2018 to all!!

Into the input. Effects loops suck unless you're using an effect that is specifically made for use in a loop, and the HPF/LPF isn't.

Some, like my Broughton HPF are. I specifically spec’ed it with Josh for that purpose.

One reason many 9V pedals don’t work well in an effects loop is because the preamp out signal may be too hot for the pedal to handle without clipping. Increasing the pedal’s available headroom is the way to fix that. In my case I can power this HPF with up to 24V for additional headroom so it’ll handle anything you could conceivably use it with.

Funny thing is it turned out to work fine with that amp using a standard 9V supply. So it just goes to show you never know till you try it.

My filters are made to work in the effects loop as well as into the input. They can take higher voltage if more headroom is needed, but so far I don't think anyone has reported needing to do that.
