I played a festival yesterday and the bassist performing after me had an B-18 that he was powering through a Variac of some sort (not sure if it was actually variac brand).
I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it, so I ask the knowledgeable people here: what's the point of this? Prolonging tube life? Specific tonal changes with the way the amp responds at lower voltages? Am I about to be convinced that I need one for my B-18?

. Some intuition made me pull out my voltmeter and check the line voltage - it was down around 100V. "Brown sound" might work for guitar, but I don't think it is good for bass.
