Brown Nut

I have my 1999 Washburn Custom Shop XB-900 -J Bass up for sale and a potential buyer noticed the Brown colored Nut in the photo and asked what material it was made of.

Thinking Natural Bone....... but I don't really know what to tell them.
Any Ideas?

Most likely a plastic nut.

Thats how much my rays were, roughly, they both have plastic nuts.

Its probably plastic.

Ok.. I just wrote to Washburn Customer Service. In the past , They have been good about answering my e-mails.

Plastic nuts are not necessarily a bad thing. There are different grades of plastic used in guitar nuts.

Cheap basses use cheap brittle plastic, higher end basses use much higher quality, higher density plastic.

I think by natural bone, you mean unbleached? If so, those are still white, just a little darker white.

Not sure what that is, but it does look like plastic.

I believe the nut was tusc.

The correct spelling is Tusq.

Tusq is a synthetic, most likely some kind of plastic formed under pressure. It is supposed to be more uniform than bone, but then, so is plastic.

It is intended as a replacement for ivory, but most people who play acoustic instruments prefer bone to Tusq.
