They are truly custom. I'm in the process of ordering one for my Red MJX-5 and trying to make up my mind for the best color scheme (not easy) and get back to Kevin with what I want.

Don't know about any trouble with holes matching up as this will be my first custom from Kevin. I'm assuming/hoping no problems in those regards. Anybody else able to chime in on this question???

I put a Glockenklang pre-amp on my MJ5. This is the origininal pre of a Sandberg.It sounds pretty mutch clean an precise, I can push the pre to the max at every frequences it doesn't brings no saturation . By now I'm so glad to play it. Big Tone !

Finally got her finished! :hyper:

Been taking my time with this one but finally got it done.

Got the custom guard from Kevin last week (man does he do good work!!) and the Bart's from BBG. I installed the switch to split the MM coils and am using a Delano 2 band pre (I might swap this out for a Bart 3 band with Mid selector to give it even more growl, but I'll have to play it out a few times live and see if I like what I've got). I'm trying GHS Infinity Steels strings for the first time. I've become a big fan of DR coated strings, but always loved the sound of GHS Boomers on my old Jazz bass, so I thought I'd give the GHS coated's a try on this one. Plus I think the red looks kinda cool with the new guard.

Anyway, here are the picks (red is so d*** hard to photograph so I tried with and without flash):

I played it in church this morning thru my rig and was VERY happy with the results. I'd gotten so used to the punch of my JJX with the Delano's so I really noticed the fuller and smoother tone of the MJX Bart's. I was surprised by the lack of, or guess I should say, lower gain/signal that comes from the Bart's. Where I had my JJX Delano's at 1/4 up I had to go probably 3/4 up to get the same volume on the MJX. No biggie . . . just surprised by the difference is all. Maybe going to an 18v Bart pre would equal this out a bit??? Don't think I can go 18v on the Delano pre.

Anyway . . . I'm very pleased :D . . . I do believe she's a keeper!!

I picked up my Brute from Brubaker today, upgraded to Bartolini 59J pickups and 4.6 NTMB 3 band eq preamp.

I have yet to get it home to check things out, but so far so good.

Kevin Walker happened to be there, so I got to meet him (very cool guy - like everybody connected to Brubaker seems to be) and he checked the new setup out for me. I took a quick cell phone clip.

Congrats.

With the Bart NTMB 3 band preamp I haven't seen a need or benefit going above 9v. That's more than enough headroom to blow up most amps:D. There's an internal gain pot that you can adjust to taste. I keep mine around 70-75% because I like it fairly hot. Excellent match for the Bart pickups.

It could be done (I haven't found Kevin's actual limits yet and trust me, I've tried;)) but the cost might be prohibitive. I was talking to Kevin about that again a couple of days ago. The paintwork is done by Kevin and fairly labor intensive. Trying to balance that with keeping them relatively affordable for a $600 bass has him thinking about not continuing to offer them. It's too bad because while they look great, I understand him trying to balance the time needed for that and building custom instruments.

The initial decision was to offer fours and fives, it plays into the economy of scale of working with that market sector. So far six string demand doesn't seem that high so I'm not sure when or if it'll happen.

Of course he does offer six strings, just not in a Brute. Speaking of which, my JXB-6 Custom Jazz 6 string should be done soon. Should be very cool... as usual.

I posted in the other brute thread the other day, but no one is reading that any more. Basically I have just bought a brute (new) off eBay. The listing stated that it has an ash body, but that is not the std spec. I asked the seller about this and he told me that it was specially made for a local artist with an endorsement. I have not received it yet, but it kinda sounds too good to be true. Has any one else heard of an ash body brute. Have any like this been made?

The Brute body is (currently) basswood. I would imagine the seller was simply mistaken. Since the Brute is an offshore, quantity build, one custom made with a different kind of wood wouldn't make any sense (it would cease to be a budget model). As the Brute passes through Brubaker for checkout, setup and any fretwork that might be needed, there is an opportunity for some customization there - in the way of electronics, pick guards, or ramps, but again a custom body wouldn't make any sense while still being a "Brute." Maybe the specifics of the build you've bought were color-combo, pick guard, etc.
