Dude, you're not thinking chronologically here. When Slayer hit with Reign in Blood, nobody had heard anything like it. Thrashing velocity, lyrics about violent death, hell and the Holocaust without any pauses. It hits you all at once and before you know it, the record's over in 28 minutes. And growling vocals didn't really exist in thrash metal.

Along with Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost Slayer helped START extreme music as we know and love it today. Of course they won't sound as "brutal"as CC-- CC came a little later down the line. Similarly, CC's lyrical content pales in comparison to say, XXX Maniak. Extremity-- and therefore, "brutality" (which has become a pretty trite term and goal at this point), is a totally evolving, relative thing.
