Btb 1005 Prestige

Saw an Ibanez btb 1005 prestige for sale locally. My question was if it was really a prestige and it’s worth. I had decided on a Marcus Miller m7 5 string. Which bass would be “better”?

Thanks Dr. Cheese, your threads have cut deeply into my practice time since I discovered this site :). As far as the BTB goes, looking at Ibanez site it’s legit. I have no experience with sire basses so I’m no help there. Reverb has had similar BTBs listed around $600. View attachment 3701472

Great, I just did not want anyone over paying.

That is not a Prestige. A real Prestige from that era would have American Bartolini electronics and different tuners.

Mine came with barts but it’s a 04 and has the midrange switch. I thought the earlier ones without the mid switch had Ibanez pickups. Also as far as I know a btb made in Japan with those woods was the btb1005 prestige.

All of the Japanese basses with the figured tops were Prestige, Barts or not. I had the Bart model, and it was one of THE best sounding basses I've ever owned...very underrated. I'm sure the Ibanez pickups were great, too, as the Prestige BTBs were the top level. I simply beat the hell out of mine from tons of shows, and eventually sold it. The one you found also has more flexibility with sweepable mids, instead of the 3-position mid switch that mine had.

I definitely would've gotten that over a Sire.

I think I see "Japan" on the back of the headstock? - And if that's an Ibanez hardshell case, yeah, I think that's a solid indicator that it's a Prestige too?

I had a mid-2000s bolt-on Ibanez BTB 6-string. Couldn't tell you the exact model, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Prestige, but it was a fantastic bass nonetheless...it would stay in tune for months...fantastic neck (I'd been afraid to even look at anything more than a 4-string bass until the BTB 6er, which I bought off a guitarist friend...)

I have zero experience with Sires, so I can't help you there, but I don't think you can really go wrong with that Ibanez!

Thank you for all the input! It’s priced at 750 with an included Ibanez hard shell case. He says it’s in pristine condition. Now my final question is would be the best bang for my buck? Or are there any other recommendations for that price point?

A Prestige Ibanez, with an Ibanez hardshell case, for $750?!?? I'd be all over it...:bassist::woot:

Some of the Prestige basses slightly predate the nomenclature Ibanez used for them. We saw the name come into formal practice when they started adding pricing tiers to other models.

I gifted my MIJ BTB 905 with an Ovangkol top to my older brother in St. Louis. I would say that the 1995 and 1996 SR 1300 and SR 900 VOL could be classified as Prestige models. The quality and pricing were in the same ballpark.
