BUDDY RICH BASSIST

That looks like Paul Kondziela, who was playing in the band at that time. I'll forward that clip to a friend of mine who knew Buddy very well and kept up with the band and see what he thinks. Cool clip!
Buddy always had great bassists, although that chair was a hot seat! I opened for him in West Palm with Mark Colby, Randy Bernson, and Gary Duchaine and Buddy had the late Wayne Pedziwater on bass-what an amazing bassist he was!

Smokin'! Buddy really took no prisoners.

Side note: On tenor, Pat Labarbera, was teaching improv. & sax at the college I studied in, back in the 80's. (up here north of the border) Didn't know he was with Buddy, but would enjoy seeing him with another great drummer, in the Alvin Jones quartet.

I had originally posted Paul Kondziela's name but changed it.

I came across this video a few years ago and dug it out to share. Check out the bass solo around 3:55. It's killer!

Hey guys just wanna know if you know the name of the bass player in this video

also if you know any other electric bass players of old jazz bands or big bands let me know

This is the response I got from my friend who was a longtime friend and fan of Buddy's and kept up with the BRB, especially in the 70s and 80s after sending him the link:
"Howdy Roy,
That was Paul Congella on bass. Congella being the correct spelling. I wish you could have seen this guy take a solo!

p.s. They listed that at 1971 but it was 1974."
I've seen it listed on recording credits as Paul Kondziela, so I'm not sure about the spelling, but I've heard about this guy for years and never seen him until now. Thank you for posting this!

do you know what really pisses me off, I type Paul Congella on Youtube just to see what happens and this guy from Jersey Shore is the only thing I get.

You can find some results on Paul Kondziela on google. He apparently wrote and arranged a killer chart for the Rich band called "Do Have At It". There's a Youtube clip of The Airmen of Note playing the tune on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show circa 1972

Great playing and great tone from that Jazz bass. I wonder if those are Di Marzio Model J pickups on there? They were far and away the most popular aftermarket pickups around at the time (1984).

Looks like the guy had one in the bridge position on the BS&T video that Roy posted, too.

I loved Buddy Rich with the big band, I saw him two or three times over here in England. My Dad took me for the first time when I was about 4 years old, it must have been my first ever concert. I particularly remember seeing him in 1979 (I think that was the year) at Birmingham Odeon. As usual he had a very young band with him (except for Steve Marcus) and the guy he'd got on bass was amazing. I'd only been playing a couple of years at the time and I was really inspired on the instrument by seeing a player of that quality. Anybody out there know who that could have been?
