Budget Amps with high gain for bass

Hi everyone, I am new to talkbass and was wondering if there were any suggestions for a bass head or combo that has high gain and can achieve a distorted tone similar to Jack Bruce.

I currently have a 40w vintage combo and it achieves the sound I want except slightly muddy. I've tried a peavy combo before that got the sound right but I can't remember the name (it had a post and pre-gain knob along with 3 eq knobs). My main bass is a 1996 Orville EB-3 which sounds great.

If any one can suggest an amp (could be a guitar amp??) under $1000 AUD it would be greatly appreciated.

Simply add a cheap used overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedal..
Edit.. I'm sorry. You asked for amp suggestion. I was thinking cheap. There are some heads and combos with distortion. Orange, Fender, Ampeg, TC, to name a few.
