Bugera 1960 for bass

I really like the looks and features of these amps. I just can't justify spending $350-$450 new (depending on how hard I look for the Infinium models) along with another $120 or more in tubes to roll on what looks like a badass amp that would get no playing time in my folk/grass and country/rock bands. That B-18-X in MD is calling my name a little louder. ;)

Before I pull the trigger on another amp that I don't need, can anyone comment on if KT88/6550 see an increase in headroom? I doubt anyone's going to scope it but I'd like to know if anyone can report a perceived difference in actual use.

Tried a standard model 1960 through an Ampeg 810e today. It plenty of midrange and upper bite, especially when overdriven... just what I like. It makes me want to play some nasty aggressive music as soon as I humanly can! I'll probably order a price matched Infinium tonight.

How was the low end with the Ampeg 810?

BTW, I still own the 810 I bought from you a while back, but, it has been overhauled with all new speakers, tolex and grill cloth.

I also had a 1960 a couple years back. I can't remember how strong its bottom was with a sealed 810.

It was fine with my 412TVX. Actually, the pair was a match made in heaven, Possibly, the best bass tone I've had when paired with my Ray Classic.

I ran it with bass & mids all the way up and occasionally cut mids down from max. Treble was fully cut. It wasn't super deep but had a lot of low mids. It'd be a great in the mix tone for a busy band with two guitarists and came across having a bright and present high and midrange despite using an 810E. I'm waiting to try to Infinium with 6550's before I make an definitive comments. I did just cancel my order on the Infinium just in case I can pick up a 400PS from New York this week though. ;)

Glad to hear the old 810's working for you! I miss having a big cab...

FWIW, my P Bass is very clean and had a semi-used set of Roto 66 on it.

Wow, that's cray to me. I run a basic 1960 (non-infinium) with mids at about 3:00, bass at 2:00, and treble and presence around 11:00, and that's about as low as I can go with the high-end and still cut through at all. And that's just with one guitar. If I turn the treble or the presence down any further, it sounds like mud. I guess it's just different strokes and such.

This type of tone stack is flattest with the T=1 M=10 B=1 :

Note that the left edge is 10Hz. You can get the low end much flatter with a couple capacitor changes :) . It drops off at about the lowest note on a guitar presently so you have to goose the bass knob to get it to have enough low end.
