Bugera 1960 for bass

Well, I went ahead and pulled the drivers out today. They're light as hell, so I'd say they're almost definitely NEOs. No brand name on them though Anyone have any idea what these are?

They're Eminence Neos custom made for Avatar (with a longer Xmax (maximum excursion). They look like these.

I wouldn't be surprised if the little Eminence label is attached to the inside of the frame. That's where they hid the ones on Hartke drivers.

Why would you want 6550s?

I forget how physically close the power tubes are to one another, but real estate might be an issue.

Since the amp will run EL34s, the heater supply shouldn't be a problem.

Yep, they fit but have to unscrew the bear claws. I'll have to order some to fit 6550.

Sounds great and looks great. Also I know this is petty but handle is way BETTER than my AD200B haha.

Is there a difference in tone or volume with the 6550's? I've been intrigued in this amp for a good while now but never got around to checking one out. I had a standard 1960 and loved it.

I see that they switched to chassis mounted preamp tube sockets in the Infinium. My 1960 has pcb mounted sockets with the tubes sitting down in the chassis and I'm afraid to try to remove them as the sockets are tight and I can't get a good grip on the tubes.

The preamp tubes do sit down into the chassis quite a bit. I just pull hard and snatched them out. They do fit really tight.

I haven't got a chance to crank it up loud and compare EL34 ( stock ) to the 6550. Seems a bit tighter and more low end off hand with the 6550.

Without the schematic or being told which tube is PI, I assume V3


I put a Tung-Sol 12AX7 in V1, JJ ECC803S in V2 and NOS Jan GE 5751 in V3. Then loaded the power tubes with some Ruby 6550s I had laying around.

I'm gonna pick up some 6550 tube retainers and should be good to go.

Tons of space to put your own chassis mount pots and such there, and looks like each has its own push connector for even bigger ease of sorting out. Wonder if that is on purpose. The tinkering crew will love such things.

Should you really do that? Are you setting the bias for the type style that likes the lowest value (I don't recall whether that would be the EL-34s or the 6L6s)?

The Infinium (new) version auto biases each tube individually .

I run it with the treble all the way down and the bass and mid all the way up - but I generally favor mids over highs. Yah, I'd like to mess with the tone stack too - hopefully someone will figure out the schematic soon . I do have the schematic of a Marshall 1960 but they've used different values in the tone stack over the years. But the kind of tone controls it has will never sound like an Ampeg no matter what values you use . The bass and treble are boost only and the mid is cut only unlike the boost/cut controls that Ampeg uses.

Yep, the newer Infinium version allows you to mismatch any 6L6, 6550, EL34 or 5881, KT88 or KT66... You get the point.

They don't have to match or anything. Throw whatever in there and the system sorts it out.

The only issues are the bear claws since the bases are different sizes. I replaced them with spring type retainers and problem solved.
