doesn't the bassist for INXS have a stingray with a p pick-up added. i remember it from the rockstar inxs supernova show.

One alternative would be to go the Billy Sheehan route and wire each pickup to a separate out. There's a good chance you'd end up wanting to EQ the two pickups differently anyway.
You could wire the split-coil pickup directly to the output jack (or put a passive volume pot in between) and send the MM pickup through a 2-band active preamp, like the one found on early Stingrays. That way, you'd still end up with just 4 knobs on the bass. Quite manageable.
Im thinking about installing a P-Pick-up on my Sterling. Maybe even a inverted pick-up, just like some Spectors and Yamahas. Why? Well i have a Precision too, but i love to play my sterling, it the bass that best fits me, but some times i just dont dig the classic MM sound.
It would be an heresy to do that? I will go to hell, when i die?
Its a 95 sterling, blue pearl, birdsesye maple, trans-bridge, etc. Its a beauty!

They offer neck pickups on MM basses nowadays, don't see why it would be "heresy" 
Anyway if you decide you don't like it you can just get a neck pickguard and you'll never notice the difference, other then maybe losing a bit of weight and knowing there's actually a hefty route under your scratchplate...
To be honest I can imagine MM and P pickups mixing quite well, probably sound almost a little too rich but would do wonders for a heavy rock mix.

on a strictly technical point of view, would it be possible to have one pickup connected to a passive tone and volume and the other one to a 2 band preamp an volume, both to the same jack without having any problems?

I don't think that would work at all. The output would be too different. Also, that's alot of knobs to put on your bass.
I just really want to be able to play the P pickup in passive!

You should consider an EMG pickup for the P. I'm not a fan of EMG pickups generally, but their split-coil P really sounds good.
Unless you want to use dual outputs (like Billy Sheehan), I think this might be our only choice. Either go with both passive (consider a Bartolini or Seymour Duncan MM pickup) or both active. I don't see any other way to do it.
