building my own pedals

i want to get into this kind of thing i have a basic understanding from doing a fair bit of reading, now rather than being a necromancer and resurrecting an older thread i thought i'd make a new un.

has anyone else built there own pedals? if so did you buy a byoc type kit or just the pcb from it and buy all the bits from your nearest maplins or electrical store equivilent? what are good pedals to start with which would help me understand alot more about whats happening?
