Built-in / "One Knobby Jobby" Compressors...

I've got the Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig v2 and find the one knob compressor works well for me. I like simplicity. I keep it set at 9 o'clock. I do wish it had an indicator light to let you know when compression was kicking in. My only other Comp was a Keeley Bassist. And again, with that, simple to use.

I run the Lusithand Ground and Pound last in my tone pedal chain. I don't love the Rat voice, but I realized I am using it as a compressor and eq of sorts. I have very little of its' actual OD blended in and the clean side of the pedal is compressed at a 2:1 ratio. I run my preamps and overdrive through it and it sounds pretty nice, allowing me to play soft or dig in with big character/little volume changes.

Don't sell it. The newer Studio Bass is pretty much a re-packaged DoubleBack. The "Sustain" will add noise if kicked above 12:30...it's even addressed in original review. Big visible knobs and they don't move with minimal provocation. IIRC, most of the material touts the DB as a GUITAR comp.

We're a little off-topic (single knob, built-ins) but it's also fun to re-visit some of the older technology!

I’ve never sold a pedal ; there’s a lot of fun to be had going through boxes of old pedals and reviving amost forgotten sounds.

I do rather like the Rat voice, and the compression on the clean signal is well-implemented, but I guess this is more of a zero-knob jobbie . I’d like to try the Alma one day, but while it’s fairly simple, doesn’t really fit the specs for this thread.

...and I do appreciate your assistance with settings! Here's what I've learned with virtually all Tech 21 products: when applying manual-suggested settings, "half" each and every one to normalize.

I'm disqualifying my first "good" compressor", a BBE OptoStomp, as it was a dedicated single-knob comp pedal but NOT a "built in".

Currently using the TonePrint multiband compressor in my TC BH250. It sounds like crap if the TonePrint knob is advanced past 12:00. I use it around 9:00 and am not really sure it’s doing anything useful, to be honest. It’s still an experiment in progress.
