:hmm: Got a call from a town where my orignals band used to do a concert 3-4 times a year.
They wanted to book us again so I emailed the band leader who pretty much said we are done. I'm not suprised but after 4 years and allot of work I feel sad and empty.
The band really started to go backwards about a year ago when the drummer a founding member moved away. The band found a replacement but it has never been the same.

This is the best group of guys I have worked with and IMO the best music I have ever done. I really feel the songwriter is gifted and really good. We had allot of fun, got good reviews.... but its done.

The issue is we have a show on May 18th. I say its our fairwell and final show. We have two more booked one in July and one in the fall and I want to cancel them. The band does not practice or communicate anymore. We all have other projects this would free up also. At this point we would just show up and play and I'm not cool with that.
The club is cool but it is a for tips only kind of place so no big pay lost here. I know the club and the owner would understand...thoughts?

Wow, that's a shame. Why has the chemistry taken such a nosedive? Did the original drummer bring *that* much to the table, or has everyone else just moved on anyway?

The drummer was the glue in some respects. As much as a pain as he was he was a friend more to me than anyone else in the band and was a friend to the BL as well.

He also did booking and PR the only other member besides myself that did it at all. I got burned out doing all of that stuff soon after he left and that was the start of the slide.
The big blow was the BL and his wife having a baby, both are in their mid/late 30's with professional jobs. I saw the writing on the wall and went with another band when we had downtime for the new child and we neve recovered. The BL needs to be grounded and just can't commit anymore. We are all friends in a way and get along very well. There has never been band drama with this group. I'm proud of the time with them and what we did.

Here is a link to the band. Link Removed

Sorry to hear that BB, but these things do come to an end. I was in a band for seven years. We put out four records, played a lot of fun shows, but we ran out of gas and all were moving on to different places in our lives. It definitely made me feel a little untethered for a while.

My wife and I are working on a baby ourselves and if we're lucky enough to have one it will mean my gigging days will be done for several months at least. Given that my current band's leader will want to keep gigging during my 'paternity' leave, I suspect I won't return to the band if he's happy with my replacement.

Wither then? Who knows? I've been learning how to use Cubase and there is a certain appeal to hanging up the dancing monkey suit for a little while and concentrating on seeing what I can come up with musically on my own.

Anyhow, sorry to hear that, but good luck in your other endeavors!

Never fun to say goodbye, but the end of this era hails in the beginning of a new one. There's something about having a cleaner slate that can bring a breath of fresh air. Give respect to the times ya'll had, but try to top it here on out!

Thanks guys. What our your thought to canceling the last two gigs that are months away. I booked the gigs and know the club they would understand. I could open up those weekends to my covers band that way.

there are worse things than dying and one of them is living too long.

if it's over, it's over. If they have "months" notice it's fair. I'm sure there is a stack of promo packs on that bar owners desk just as wide and deep as the pile on every other bar owners desk.

Trust me its no problem here.Although its a low play place its kind of like the Austin city limits of this city a cool hip place. The club books for the year in the week they hold open for it every fall. There will be folks waiting in line for our gigs there.

I'd cancel. You might also talk to the songwriter and see if he is interested in starting something new.

He is working with some people on his own who are helping him with his songs. This was another problem the band got stale and we did not work on new songs and he hated that...I also.

He doesn't want to gig so I have no interest,I have a gigging country band to concentrate on now.

Sometimes a band just reaches a point where there's just no "juice" left, and it's time to disband it. It can happen for many different reasons.

The first cover band I played in was a thing my best friend and I started when I was still in college. That band went on for about eight years. It started out as sort of a joke, and became a semi-serious working cover band. We only played gigs sporadically, and went through quite a few lineup changes. Eventually, I got tired of it, and could tell we were just running out of steam. We were both tired of dealing with flakey drummers, etc. Finally we ended things amicably.

Now we have a much better band going with a pro-level drummer. Just because a band ends doesn't mean you can't stay friends, or that you can't work together again in the future.

Very true. We have all said we will reamin friends and would work together again maybe someday...who knows. It also leaves the chance for our big reunion tour :smug:

I need to move on and after the BL responded to my email kind of surprised I wanted out of the last two gigs. I told him the gigs are his and the musti strings players to do acousticlly..its up to them but I'm out.
